Random Sh*t

Random Shot. That's what my title means, little brother who should probably not be reading this blog but is so dang cute he gets away with everything.

Moving on. Coherence is a virtue I have not always been gifted with. Today I've been writing work-related nonsense for a solid 11 hours already, and my mind is fried. Ergo, you get random, um, "shot".

I hate my hair. Once a month the moon is in the right stage and the humidity is perfect and it works, but the rest of the time I pile it on top of my head and hide it from the world. As much as I hate it now, I have to remember that at one point I had an orange afro. In comparison, I now look freaking awesome all of the time.

Orange afro. Never again.
My mother-in-law is visiting for two weeks. I know, I know - insert mother-in-law jokes here. But actually, it's kind of nice to do all the touristy stuff that we would never do ourselves. Yesterday that meant going to the Hunter Museum of American Art in Chattanooga - awesome.

Rest days kind of suck. Yesterday I was all, "yeah - tomorrow is a rest day!" and today I want to pull my eyelashes out one at a time because I can't run. I'm antsy. I keep biting my nails and twisting my hair around and eating random crap because....well, just because.  Because I'm bored and getting up to eat more candy is more fun than writing anymore.

I have the best job ever. Ignore everything bad I've ever said about it. I was lying. Honestly, I love my job. I work from home, I get to do what I love - write - and I get a lot of feedback so I can get better. (I'm not deluded enough to think I'm perfect, so critique is a blessing.) Seriously - if anyone wants to break into freelance writing, send me an email. I certainly don't need the competition, but I wish someone had shared a few resources with me a few years ago and saved me a lot of time and hassle.

I'm doing a giveaway on Facebook tomorrow.  Chobani sent a me a big ol' package of love today, and I want to share the wealth. I got an awesome water bottle and then a kind of less awesome but still fun bag with speakers. I don't know where to take the bag with speakers, but I'm so excited to have it. I'm going to use it as a purse, plug my iPod into it and have an ongoing soundtrack for my life. Anyway - my facebook page. Giveaway. Tomorrow. I'm keeping the bag, but I'll be giving away some free yogurt coupons instead.

Love your hair or hate it? P.S. If you have awesome straight hair that requires no maintenance I will shank you. JUST KIDDING! Cuddles.
My hair is this weird stage between fro and ringlets naturally. It looked good when I had it permanently straightened in Hong Kong, but the process causes cancer, is banned in America and costs a fortune, so that was just the one time. But damn, it looked good.

What song(or songs) would be on the soundtrack to your life?
"Sundress" by Ben Harper (I love the song, but I also just love sundresses. That's as deep as I get here) and Hot Blooded by Foreigner.  Because I'm awesome.

Comments

  1. Don't hate me but I can wear my hair either straight or curly and it behaves really well most of the time. Now sometimes in the humidity it's a lost cause but that's when I throw it in a ponytail and go.

  2. Oh that hair is awesome. I've had several perms gone awry in my pre-teen years. Songs on my soundtrack??? That is a great question! "All Alright" by Fun. "Nobody Gets Me But You" by Spoon. "All is Full of Love" by Bjork. "Do You Realize" by The Flaming Lips. Oh and of course, "Can't be Tamed" by Miley.

  3. I love my hair. It's totally unique and by blowdrying it for like a minute and half I can get it to look good like 95% of the time. It's a pain in the ass in the summer but who's isn't?

Baby Got Back, or Whooty. Same general theme.

Rest days are awesome, and I want a job where I never have to leave the house.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Hate me. My hair is straight all the time. It's just wash and go, literally. I don't have to brush it, it dries flat and straight. Sometimes I wish I have some curls though. I always loved little ringlets curls. I guess you like what you can't have.

  5. I kind of love the orange hair...it's super cute. I'd love to freelance write...if you're serious...I'll take whatever tips you got!

    ReplyDelete
  6. I have straight hair and my daughter has ringlet curls! I seriously have no idea how to style her hair as I have always had straight hair.

  7. Having a job where I could stay home sounds awesome, but so does NOT having a job haha :)

My hair is frizzy in the summer, dry in the winter. At least it's not gray.

Rest days make me antsy too, unless I'm too busy to notice (like, not at home busy)

  8. I have a love/hate relationship with working from home, it's bc I have kids. They can be so distracting. I love that I can make my own schedule and I think I get more done bc I'm not socializing.

    ReplyDelete
  9. You must have plenty of people tell you that they "love your hair" or "wish they had your curls!" And they're 100% honest. But I'll bet - from personal experience - that you want to give a bad perm to each and every one of 'em. (I know I do!)

I have a love/hate relationship with my curls. I figure people with thin, straight hair hate theirs, too. Mine turns into a good 80s-hair-band style on Oct 31 every year, so I've got that going for me!

    ReplyDelete
  10. I have a lot of hair. It's thick and coarse and it frizzes. It sticks out. It is so imperfect :P

On the soundtrack of my life... I'm Too Sexy, of course ;-)

  11. I love your hair! I have mixed feelings about my own hair. My hair is not straight and dries with a wave. If it brush it dry it turns into a big poof ball! In order for it to be presentable I have to blow dry it and curl it for hours and then I go for a run and it's a mess again!

  12. my hair....well my kids ruined it for me....back to back pregnancy...not good for my hair...I lost a ton, it never came back and so now I have thin hair... it is not straight but I am ok with that!

I hate rest days as well. I rested today and I was grumpy all day.

looking forward to meeting you very soon!

  13. My hair is flat and really thin, like 80 year old lady thin, I'd loooove full and unruly hair for awhile. The mail lady also brought me a box of chocolates and mini Larabars today. Thank you! I think the rest of my summer runs are going to be fueled by all that :)

  14. Kids ruined my hair too. It was all straight and awesome because I barely had to brush it. Now there is a perma-dreadlock at the base of my skull. Looking back, I'm not sure if it was worth it (not true, but you know).

    ReplyDelete
  15. Hate my hair this morning, but thankfully I'm going to the hairdresser today WOOOHOOO :-)

    ReplyDelete
  16. You know, on a rest day, you don't just have to sit around. I rarely do no physical activity on my rest days. I usually take the dog for a long walk or go hiking.

I love my hair most days. The fact that I can shower and let it air dry and it looks good is awesome.

Hi Vanessa, I am sooo sorry about your hair - you know you get it from me, my bad! But yours is so thick and has actual curls - mine on the other hand is kind of a mix between curly, kinky and straight (just the front is straight! Its a real joy to style! My hair also behaved slightly better before my children came along - Ha!

    1. Mom-sorry I ruined your hair! Hopefully my smiling face more than makes up for that. Right? Right?!

And great job running for 40 minutes yesterday - Whoo-hoo!

BTW, I actually ran today. For 40 minutes!

  19. Wait... so does this mean you blow dry your hair straight every day now? Wow I do not have the patients for that! I wear my curls crazy or normally up in a bun, aka I don't own a hairdryer and am proud of it :D

    ReplyDelete

    1. NO WAY! Haha, I don't own a hairdryer either. Way too much work involved for someone who works from home!

  20. I'm always excited for rest days until they happen. Yesterday was a rest day and I felt so yucky from it that I was up at 5 am (which never happens to me) doing situps and pushups! :-) I have straight hair and let me tell you it still takes maintenance I also wear mine up a lot! We always want what we don't have, right?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Don't hate me. I have weird non-straight, non-curly, somewhat wavy and freaky cow-licky hair that requires blowdrying :P

    ReplyDelete
  22. Cuddles, hahaha. I feel ya on the hair issues. I have curly hair that would have been kickass in the 80s but is less manageable with the 100% humidity in which I live. I finally settled on "cream" because mousse is crunchy and nasty and I don't own a hair dryer. I've tried garnier and organix both. May be worth a shot, helps with humidity.. I swear.

  23. I finally stopped straightening my hair a few years ago and have learned to love my curls. Growing my hair longer helped and so did finding the right product (I love Carol's Daughter and Jessicurl).

    ReplyDelete
  24. After struggling with hair loss, I am now very thankful for my hair. I just let it grow and grow and the weight makes it more manageable. I probably should do more with it, but I'm lazy. Currently, I'm in Mexico and the humidity is out of control, so it's doing it's own thing, nothing can tame it. Frizz frow extreme.

I also like my MIL....I lucked out.

    ReplyDelete
  25. um, I freaking love coupons. especially ones that are for something free. I get butterflies in my stomach when I use coupons! It's creepy, I know.

    ReplyDelete
  26. My hair is crap right now because I had a steroid shot and it all fell out, but usually it is very well behaved. I don't own a blow dryer or straightener (or any other "tool" unless you count a comb) and I don't color it and I cut it myself. It doesn't look perfect, but it needs no care, so I'll take it.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Some days I love my hair and some days I hate it, always a love/hate relationship! lol

    ReplyDelete
  28. I have very very straight hair - even though I sometimes wish it had a little more oomph, anytime the humidity creeps up, I thank my lucky stars that even in high humidity, I can let my hair air dry and it doesn't turn into a giant poof ball.

    ReplyDelete
  29. i think we have the same hair. except i now pay for keratin treatment to keep it straight (got hooked after a groupon). and straighten it every day. it’s no fun. but it sure looks way better than it did years ago-a christmas tree shaped fro (with my cheap straightener back in the day).

    ReplyDelete
  30. I agree with the "Oh my poor hair dries bone straight" <------- OH no! lol I WISH!!! my hair is an in between type hair so the longer it gets the more I like it (ie: less wave and frizz, due to the weight holding it down) I hate my blonde highlights and am trying to grow them out. It is going to take forever. I don't know why I dye my hair I LOVE it's natural colour.

Chobani is awesome! but I have never received a bag with speakers - Hello Emily! please send me one ;) lol

and I like the orange fro PS: I wish I was a good enough writer to freelance. Alas I can't even string together a simple sentence ;)

  31. you should look into the brazilian blowout. I had one done in april, does wonders for my hair with all this darn humidity. worth the money

    ReplyDelete
  32. Thanks again for the info you sent, Vanessa!

My hair is permanently in a pony tail. I look really professional in my suits and pony tail at the office!

    ReplyDelete
  33. That was some gourmet shot right there! My hair, kill me know, is stick straight. I hate it. I want poofy, curly hair! For real. Want to trade?

    ReplyDelete
  34. I have curly hair that I now straight iron. I cut it off three years ago and LOVED it. Now, I want a pony tail back. NOt as long as it was (my hair stylist's arm would kill me when she blow drys) but running with a clip in the center doesn't work, as I turn into bozo the clown with wiry hair on above the ears ;-)

LOVE the Chobani. they were handing out free cups in Chicago at the rock n roll there! That was sooo worth it. It wasn't just for racers either. Joy for everyone!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I love these random posts :) :) :) And I think your orange fro looks fabulous!! My hair is in between straight and curly. I've got a pit of a frizzy wave going on that is probably not the hottest thing around. I think I've blow dried it twice this entire summer. It's been bun and ponytail season!

    ReplyDelete
  36. What!!! You hate ur curls???? You know how many ppl have straight hair? Now do u know how Many ppl have beautiful curly hair? Ya not that many. My hair looks exactly like yours in the picture and I absolutely adore it! Just find the right anti friz cream And ur good to go 5 min after a shower ( I use l'occitane , five essential oils cream.,, it's amazing). Seriously love ur afro! You have a full, thick and beautiful Hair.

Race the Bar 5k Recap (AKA: A Personal Worst!)

Do you remember a few weeks back, when I was all braggy about running in Florida in February/March? Sunny mornings around a lake with a light breeze off the water have turned, cruelly, into humid stretches of time where I am humbly reminded of my own limitations. You guys, I see these gazelle-like creatures, men and women alike, who prance on my running route with compression socks, a soft glow of perspiration at their brow. It's beautiful. It's also a harsh reminder that I am not them. I am currently running in the thinnest, smallest items of clothing I can without offending anyone (shirt stays on, people). I dare not step outside without some awful visor or wide-brimmed hat. When I hop in the shower after a run, my face is a deep crimson that causes my husband to voice his concern for my general well-being. Have I mentioned this is what happens after my easy runs, with a few walk breaks thrown in? Yeah. It's humbling. Now, I'm not complaining. It's beautiful

1st Wedding Anniversary--Celebrating with Chocolate!

One year ago today, I married the love of my life. And I couldn't be happier! In celebration of our very first anniversary, here are some pictures of our favorite moments together: Our first trail race together Hiking together in GA And of course, our wonderful wedding in Hong Kong. We both decided to keep things very simple, with a casual ceremony with a few friends and family and then lunch at the Mandarin Oriental. Exactly what I wanted! With our parents after making it official! Our entire wedding party. Just family and dear friends! Goofing around with my garter at the reception lunch! You think you know what couples do after they get married? You know, their first night at man and wife? If you guessed eat ridiculously delicious chocolates in their bed at the Grand Hyatt, you're right.  Oh, I haven't changed. One year later and I still celebrate with sweet things! Thanks Tim, for being a wonderful husband. I love you!

Brace Yourselves: Cuteness is Coming

One of the hardest things about moving, for me, was wondering how the cats would adjust each time. Although our cats are super travelers at this stage, I feel really guilty every time we have to pack them up and force them onto a plane. I remember my grandma telling me years ago that when she moved with a cat, they put butter on their paws. That way, the cats spent the first day in a new house licking their paws to get them clean, and that was enough time to lose the "smell" of the old house. I love that story, and I wish the same principle applied to longer moves. Anyway, that's a super long intro to say that for the fellow cat ladies out there, our three fur babies are insanely happy in this jungle gym of a home here in Florida. It's warm, there are plenty of sunny spots to curl up a take a nap, and they have lots of room to spread out. Despite the space, of course, they still usually want to take a nap on my head at night. Obviously. They also love climbing on ou
