Active Bands Review and Giveaway

Click this link at your own risk, but let it suffice to say that I have some wild hair. No, not a couple of curls. A wild, beastly tangle that is NOT allowed out on its own. Ever. So running is a challenge. A ponytail is a given...and then usually a bun. I tried a few different headbands in the past, but they all end up "sweating off" and either annoying me completely or just falling onto the floor.

Enter Active Bands. I wish there was some kind of heavenly gate chimes or something to accompany this post. I feel that strongly. I know there are a few "running" bands specifically designed to keep your hair in place, and I can't speak for them all because I haven't tried them all, but of every one I have put to the test, Active Bands are the only ones that work.

I read about them so much on blogs that I bought my own to try out several months ago. I purchased two, and then basically alternated them day in and day out. You probably recognize them (black and turquoise) because they are in 90% of my running/workout photos:

I hate when I forget one for a run, and I would never dream of wearing anything else for a race. So I was pretty excited to win a giveaway that sent me two more bands! I picked out a bright pink one and a blue/black zebra print one that my younger sister immediately was interested in. She got to try it on (pictures below) but I'm keeping that baby for myself! She gets the pink one though, I promise I'm not a terrible big sister.

Those two pictures may or may not have taken 10 minutes. There were a lot of rejects. What can I say? Gotta look good for the blog. That's why you got a picture of the top of my head and not my face. You're welcome.

I swear there was a point here....oh! Active Bands! Obviously you are just waiting for me to tell you how to get your own, and I don't blame you. Active Bands have offered to give TWO readers each a gift certificate for $25. Then, you can pick which ones you like best and have them shipped to you. Here's how to win:

+1 Become a follower of my blog, or let me know if you are already (Mandatory)
+1 Tell me which style Active Band you like most from their website
+1 Spread the word about this giveaway--blog, Facebook, Twitter, etc.
Be sure to leave a comment for each entry to be counted!

Good luck kiddos! I'll end the contest on Sunday night at midnight and pick a winner then, so be sure to have your entries in before October 17th.

  13. My hair breaks so easily that I have to wear a headband or I end up with bangs from wind-induced breakage. Cover up the roots, and it usually prevents that problem. I'm a follower and regularly comment, especially on the non-giveaway posts (brownie points can't hurt right?).

  14. Didn't know you were on Facebook. Just liked you over there too!! :)

  15. I have never tried active bands (boo, I know) - so I'm not sure which would be better - the thinner or the thicker ones. My hair is MUCH like yours - what size do you prefer? I LOVE the red bandana print - that's just awesome. I think the glitter ones would be fun to wear for races - but the flower ones and the black and white paisley is cute too - oh no, maybe just one of every kind :)

  16. I follow your face off.

Not that I expect these to work. I swear my head is deformed. Every band I try that *swears* it will stay in place slips within five minutes. Maybe I'm secretly a conehead.

Are You a Salty Sweater? The Truth About Sodium and Running

Before I started running regularly, I did my best to avoid salt. After all, if you want to lose weight you're supposed to reduce sodium, right? Here's what the American Federal Government's recommendations for sodium intake (as of January 2011)

-if you're 51+ years old, black, have hypertension, kidney disease or diabetes, you get 1,500 mg. each day
-if you're a healthy adult, you get 2,300 mg. per day. A teaspoon.

Now most of the time, I don't have an issue with this. Salt isn't used too much in my cooking, and I avoid a lot of common processed foods filled with sodium. When I do indulge in a salty meal, usually from a restaurant, I get the associated water weight gain and bloating. So I'm happy to stick to my meeting my 2,300 mg. requirements each day.

And then...summer arrives. If you're running in high humidity, you sweat. A lot. It's not pretty, and you're draining your body of electrolytes like sodium. On my long runs, I take precauti…

DIY Treadmill Desk

Working from home has its perks. Sure, my social interaction skills are deteriorating rapidly and casual dress Fridays now include those old ratty boxers and that one race shirt with the hole, but I also get to enjoy things like eating lunch at 10:30 because I feel like it and deciding where I want to work. Like on the treadmill.

Between working at my desk all day, using my computer for fun and then sitting on the couch watching television most nights for an hour or two, it's safe to say I sit on my ass a lot. And yep, that's not so great for you. Even though I work out 6 days a week, I hate that I spend easily 75% of my waking hours sitting.

On a whim, I asked Tim if he could build me a treadmill desk. I've seen these massive contraptions to make treadmill desks, but they basically transform it into a full-time desk, and I still want to use my treadmill for running (sans desk) as well. Magic carpenter man took a few measurements and brought me in a prototype by lunchtime.…

I Wanna Play! My 7 Links

I've been loving the "7 Links" Posts circulating the blogging world lately, so when I was tagged by Holly at Rust Belt Runner I couldn't wait to participate. Without further ado, here are my Seven Links...

Most Popular Post: Aside from giveaways (and we know why those are popular), one of my most read and commented on post was about my Weight Loss Journey. It got so much attention, it deserved it's own little tab at the top of my page!

Most Controversial Post: My post Good Person > Good Racer was possibly the most controversial. I talked about my own experience racing with my husband, and whether or not it is racer etiquette (or just plain rude) to pass someone when you planned on running together. Lots of differing options in this area!

Most Helpful Post: One of my earlier posts was titled What's Worth It, and recapped some running extras and whether or not they're beneficial. I go so much great feedback on products like foam rollers, compression sock…
