I'm Re-Lay Excited to Head to Colorado!

If I started a blog post without a horrific pun, how would you know it was mine? I apologize for the "re-lay" though- even that's a stretch for me. So what am I getting so excited about in Colorado? This summer's Ragnar Relay! I will be running 187 miles this July - well, kind of. I will be running a little portion of the total distance, which is divided into 36 legs run by 12 people.

Source

The team is made up of 12 bloggers, which is going to be a lot of fun. Plus, I won't feel embarrassed when I want to bust out the camera every 6 minutes to document super important stuff. Like snacks. So who have I tricked into running with me? The following ladies:

Van 1:
1- Me! No pressure being the first runner, geez!
2- Danielle @ Happy, Healthy and Strong
3- Lisa @ Because I Can
4- Jill H. @ Run for the Hills
5-Lauren @ Duck on the Run
6-Amanda @ Run to the Finish

Van 2:
7- Julia @ Pain, Pride and Perseverance
8- Rachelle @ Running for Trevor
9-Ashley U. @ Ashley and Diz
10- Ashley R. @ Redonk Runner
11- Jill C. @ Fitness, Health and Happiness
12- Kara @ Mile High Maven

This will be not only my first trip to Colorado, but my first relay race of any kind. We are in the process of getting some sponsors, and Handful was one of the first I thought of. I've already talked about my love for their bras in the past (here) and I'm not shy about it:

So when I got another bra from them a few days ago, I was in heaven. Whoever said that "one handful is enough" was lying to me. Clearly I needed two. Last week I thought I could handle a different sports bra for a long run and got chafed like CRAZY in the chestage area. No pictures because it borders on something you should really have to pay for. Learned by lesson - stick to Handful!

What you can see if this video that Handful put out recently to learn about their bras. Yes, it's an ad- but it's super cute and I like it. It's not the first ad I have watched on repeat online and I'm sure it won't be the last. How they managed to make a sports bra so sexy is beyond me.

Have you ever run a relay like Ragnar? Any advice for training for something like this (or running at high altitudes?)
I've never run a relay of any kind like this. I'm definitely a little worried about elevation but I hope it that training in the GA summer and humidity is at least a little bit helpful.

Any good team name suggestions? We're playing around with a few but haven't settled on anything.
Something about blogging/the web would be neat since we're all bloggers but really anything goes. "Beast Mode" was also a possibility!

  1. Ah I am so jealous right now!! Take me with you please!!!!!! I have never run a relay but I would love to!! I will try and think of some funny names...but I think you're better at that kind of stuff!! I love my Handful as well! So comfy :)

  2. That'll be fun...oh...relay in July. That means it will be hot and even more sweat and even more smelliness in a van! :-) That was the thing I learned about doing a relay!

  3. I haven't run a relay in years, but know you will rock it!!! Best of luck!

  4. I would never do one, but I think for most people a relay is fun! I just treasure my sleep too much. If I'm going to be running at 2am, I'm damn sure running a 100 mile race instead of a 6 mile leg and then sitting in a smelly van. Oh, but you'll have fun. :)

Team name suggestions: 12 girls and a cup or... wait, all of my suggestions are really inappropriate. I'll keep them to myself.

  5. Such a fun team of ladies!!!! Relays are by far my favorite. I have done a handful of them so far and am looking forward to a few this year, too. The Colorado race is going to be insane with the hills! Super fun times ahead for all of you. I would suggest to- train on some serious hills, don't neglect your 2 and 3 a day training runs, and to get used to the foods you will be using on race day. So, not much different than a marathon. Most of all- just enjoy it!

I love the handful bra as well- after 2 years of running and trying different bras, I have finally found one I love! You look great in yours :).

    1. Luckily I have my fair share of hills around here, but I definitely need to try running twice a day! That's something I do....never.

  6. I've never done one and they kinda scare the crap out of me- I don't like pressure from other people when I run.

Not sure if you read her, but Meals and Miles did a very intense, multi-part posting series on hers (plus tons and tons and tons of pictures of her post-ragnar engagement).

  7. I've never done one before, but I was looking at either the Colorado Relay or the Wild West Relay--both other relays here in Colorado that I'm curious about :)

If you have any CO questions, let me know! :)

  9. Im doing the Madison to Chicago ragnar as an Ultra team. Should be fun, I look forward to hearing about how yours goes. Your team name could be "Super Number One Blogger Ladies Team" Good luck.

    1. Yikes, an ultra sounds insane! The name you suggest IS an apt description of how cool we are.

  10. For the holidays I went to Colorado to visit the in-laws and attempted to run for the first time at altitude. Shockingly I didn't have as much trouble as I thought. The last time i went there just walking around seemed difficult, but that was 40lbs heavier and not as in shape as I am. Drink lots of water and I swear by Nuun and you should be fine!!!! You will have a blast! I did Reach the beach last year and had a blast during the relay. PS I ordered a handful bra just now too. I have been wanting to try one and your post pushed me over the edge!

      1)Maybe I won't die running in Colorado
      2) I heart Handful. Hope you love it!

  11. I agree handfuls are the BEST! Sounds like a fun group of girls to run a relay with, that will be so much fun!

  12. Altitude is my first thought.... big difference from Georgia. Can you go a week or so early to do some training?

I know you will have a blast with that group of gals... so fun.

  13. What a fun team! You will have a blast! The altitude might be difficult, but the fun will outweigh it.

  14. I'm doing one with a bunch of random bloggers this summer, too. Too bad it's not the same one.

  15. OOH I am jealous, what a fun group of bloggers. If you need an alternate, let me know :)

I'll brainstorm some names for your team!

  18. I love Handful! I wore mine in the Baltimore Marathon and my husband was getting ready to start the half with a friend and told his friend to look out for me. I was wearing a hot pink shirt with my name on it in giant letters but my husband told his friend that I was wearing a special bra that made my boobs look awesome and that's what he should look for. Normal. I've heard great things about Ragnar. I have to keep my team name ideas for when I am running it in Miami this winter. Sorry!

  19. That's going to be so much fun! I'm going to run the Cape Cod Ragnar in May, I think.

  20. OOoooh how exciting!!!!! :D That sounds like it'll be a blast! And Colorado is beautiful...if I could deal with the cold I'd want to live there!

  22. yayyyy! love this! and seriously...this is my first experience with handful. i just never understood why there was so much hype about a sports bra. now i do. i am in love with the thing!

  23. You're gonna have a blast! We ran at altitude (7000-8000) at Crater Lake and it was definitely tough. Maybe ifyou can get there a few days earlier? Although I guess it only really mattrs if you plan on winning the thing :)

  26. So very excited to run this Ragnar with you and yay for being runner #1!! I am runner #1 at Del Sol Ragnar next week and way excited to run first. :)

P.S. My favorite part about Ragnar is the snacks so I'm glad we're on the same page with that. :)

  28. That's so awesome and I'm so jealous!!! I definitely want to do one at some point!!!

  29. So much fun! I can't wait to follow your training and read all about the relay!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Oh that sounds like so much fun, bet its great.

  31. I second the training on hills. Colorado is high in elevation, even before you get to the mountains! It's always fun to drive across IA through Neb and into Colo, cause you end up belching as your insides equalize with the air on the outside--or at least that's what this family says/does ;-)

Wish I could wear the handful. Unfortunately, I was dealt the hand of many more than handful. I am sticking with my new love of CW-X bras. :-D Though I wonder if I could just wear that brand you love around the house and on errands. hmmm.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Yay!! You will love it! Seriously so much fun. :) And Rachelle and Julia are so much fun! You've got a good group! I've ran in high elevation my entire life...so I'm not really good with any advice. You just get used to it. :)

  33. Oh Vanessa - Congratulations! What a wonderful honor and so exciting!!! I'm thrilled for you!!!!

I have never run anything like Ragnar (not shocking) - but I did read a lot of blogs last year from those who did - seems like zip lock bagies containing everything you need for each leg is a winning strategy.

    Congrats!!!

Race the Bar 5k Recap (AKA: A Personal Worst!)

Do you remember a few weeks back, when I was all braggy about running in Florida in February/March? Sunny mornings around a lake with a light breeze off the water have turned, cruelly, into humid stretches of time where I am humbly reminded of my own limitations. You guys, I see these gazelle-like creatures, men and women alike, who prance on my running route with compression socks, a soft glow of perspiration at their brow. It's beautiful. It's also a harsh reminder that I am not them. I am currently running in the thinnest, smallest items of clothing I can without offending anyone (shirt stays on, people). I dare not step outside without some awful visor or wide-brimmed hat. When I hop in the shower after a run, my face is a deep crimson that causes my husband to voice his concern for my general well-being. Have I mentioned this is what happens after my easy runs, with a few walk breaks thrown in? Yeah. It's humbling. Now, I'm not complaining. It's beautiful

1st Wedding Anniversary--Celebrating with Chocolate!

One year ago today, I married the love of my life. And I couldn't be happier! In celebration of our very first anniversary, here are some pictures of our favorite moments together: Our first trail race together Hiking together in GA And of course, our wonderful wedding in Hong Kong. We both decided to keep things very simple, with a casual ceremony with a few friends and family and then lunch at the Mandarin Oriental. Exactly what I wanted! With our parents after making it official! Our entire wedding party. Just family and dear friends! Goofing around with my garter at the reception lunch! You think you know what couples do after they get married? You know, their first night at man and wife? If you guessed eat ridiculously delicious chocolates in their bed at the Grand Hyatt, you're right.  Oh, I haven't changed. One year later and I still celebrate with sweet things! Thanks Tim, for being a wonderful husband. I love you!

Brace Yourselves: Cuteness is Coming

One of the hardest things about moving, for me, was wondering how the cats would adjust each time. Although our cats are super travelers at this stage, I feel really guilty every time we have to pack them up and force them onto a plane. I remember my grandma telling me years ago that when she moved with a cat, they put butter on their paws. That way, the cats spent the first day in a new house licking their paws to get them clean, and that was enough time to lose the "smell" of the old house. I love that story, and I wish the same principle applied to longer moves. Anyway, that's a super long intro to say that for the fellow cat ladies out there, our three fur babies are insanely happy in this jungle gym of a home here in Florida. It's warm, there are plenty of sunny spots to curl up a take a nap, and they have lots of room to spread out. Despite the space, of course, they still usually want to take a nap on my head at night. Obviously. They also love climbing on ou
