The Color Run - Free Race Entries!

First - a question. It is possible to truly "race for fun"? No, really.

REALLY.

I mean, even people who use races as training runs are still using it for something productive - to gain endurance, learn how to fuel properly, test out race day clothes, etc.

Personally, if I'm going to pay money to run a race I'm going to race. Not jog. Not see how it goes. Not just prance around for fun. Race. It might not always go well but I'll try. So when I heard about the Color Run a few months back I was intrigued. It's not a race for time. It's a race that you want to last as long as possible because it's so freaking fun.

I contacted the race director right away and asked him some questions about the race. He got busier and busier....because this race is blowing up. Most of the destinations sell out instantly - including Atlanta. Luckily they announced this week that there will be an encore race in Atlanta on April 7th - and I get to give away two race entries! (Just a heads up - I'll be giving away two more race entries to a new city next week. Stay tuned to find out which city!)

The Color Run will be in the following cities this year: Atlanta, Southern California, Seattle, Denver, Chicago, Kansas City, Portland, Miami, Nashville...you get the idea. EVERYWHERE.

The basic idea is that as you run the 5k course wearing a white shirt. The race staff take care of the rest. Got it?

Start like this...

And end up like this!
I'm pretty excited for the Color Run because it's NOT competitive - it's just fun. After the race there is a fun party atmosphere that I can't wait to be a part of.

Do you ever pay to run races just for fun?
I never have before - I can run for fun on my own. But I can't force people to throw color on me as I run around my neighborhood, so I'm definitely on board for the Color Run!

Want to win one of two free entries to the Color Run Atlanta on April 7th? Here's what to do - each entry is optional but each one counts as an entry for the race:

+1: Like The Color Run on Facebook and leave me a comment saying you did
+1: Like Gourmet Runner on Facebook and leave me a comment saying you did
+1: Spread the word about this giveaway on Twitter, Facebook or your own blog and let me know where!
+8: If you graffiti your entry on a wall somewhere and take a picture. DO IT.

I'll pick the winner at midnight on March 14th and announce the winner the next day!

  10. Interesting! Similar idea to warrior dash - get dirty, not worry about time. That was definitely for fun. I'm almost ashamed to admit that I have done races for fun, since it's like a no-no in the blog world. Maybe it's not the idea going in, but sometimes it's not going well and so I decide to just try and enjoy it and get over worrying about time. Or I did a 20 mile race as a training run for a marathon, but I ran it at more of a training pace than a race pace. This year I am running a half that I had to defer my entry to last year 6 days before the Half Ironman - that may have to end up being for fun.

  15. I did this one in Austin and it definitely fell into your category of "Big race that's too big, and consequently had A LOT of problems..." I hope for all of your sakes that these issues have been addressed in future sites....

    1. I haven't heard anything but I can imagine there were problems with a new race of that size. Hopefully any issues can be solved since they will be running races so often over the next year. What problems did you notice?

    2. There were a few...it was sad. I was so excited for this race too!

      - It had rained a lot, and the course was cross country through a park and HILLY. The mud was over ankle deep throughout the whole thing. Tens of thousands of dollars of damage had to have been done to that park.

      - Similarly, throughout the advertising they billed this as a family event. This course was not a place for children, and especially not strollers. Granted, they warned people not to bring strollers, but not until about 6:30am the day of the race.

      - The location of the race wasn't announced until a couple of weeks (max) before the event

      - Parking was a nightmare. A lot of people didn't make it on time.

      - The start time was about 30 minutes later than it was supposed to be.

      - The last color stations during the race were out of color by the time I got there, and I was forward of the middle...

Overall, it was just a really big mess. I don't understand why they did a lot of things the way they did. It's such a great and fun concept, but at least here, they absolutely blew it. I'll be hard pressed to justify paying the $40 to do this one again...

And yes I would have to say that I would pay for a race and run it just for fun. I would not have said this a year ago but now I totally would.

  25. Not entering, but I wish I could. It looks like so much fun. I would get the shirt framed afterwards and put it up in my sports room, not that I actually have one, but I can dream.

I can't wait for you to do the run so I can read your re-cap and laugh at your photos, ooops, I meant enjoy your photos :)

Race the Bar 5k Recap (AKA: A Personal Worst!)

Do you remember a few weeks back, when I was all braggy about running in Florida in February/March? Sunny mornings around a lake with a light breeze off the water have turned, cruelly, into humid stretches of time where I am humbly reminded of my own limitations. You guys, I see these gazelle-like creatures, men and women alike, who prance on my running route with compression socks, a soft glow of perspiration at their brow. It's beautiful. It's also a harsh reminder that I am not them. I am currently running in the thinnest, smallest items of clothing I can without offending anyone (shirt stays on, people). I dare not step outside without some awful visor or wide-brimmed hat. When I hop in the shower after a run, my face is a deep crimson that causes my husband to voice his concern for my general well-being. Have I mentioned this is what happens after my easy runs, with a few walk breaks thrown in? Yeah. It's humbling. Now, I'm not complaining. It's beautiful

1st Wedding Anniversary--Celebrating with Chocolate!

One year ago today, I married the love of my life. And I couldn't be happier! In celebration of our very first anniversary, here are some pictures of our favorite moments together: Our first trail race together Hiking together in GA And of course, our wonderful wedding in Hong Kong. We both decided to keep things very simple, with a casual ceremony with a few friends and family and then lunch at the Mandarin Oriental. Exactly what I wanted! With our parents after making it official! Our entire wedding party. Just family and dear friends! Goofing around with my garter at the reception lunch! You think you know what couples do after they get married? You know, their first night at man and wife? If you guessed eat ridiculously delicious chocolates in their bed at the Grand Hyatt, you're right.  Oh, I haven't changed. One year later and I still celebrate with sweet things! Thanks Tim, for being a wonderful husband. I love you!

Brace Yourselves: Cuteness is Coming

One of the hardest things about moving, for me, was wondering how the cats would adjust each time. Although our cats are super travelers at this stage, I feel really guilty every time we have to pack them up and force them onto a plane. I remember my grandma telling me years ago that when she moved with a cat, they put butter on their paws. That way, the cats spent the first day in a new house licking their paws to get them clean, and that was enough time to lose the "smell" of the old house. I love that story, and I wish the same principle applied to longer moves. Anyway, that's a super long intro to say that for the fellow cat ladies out there, our three fur babies are insanely happy in this jungle gym of a home here in Florida. It's warm, there are plenty of sunny spots to curl up a take a nap, and they have lots of room to spread out. Despite the space, of course, they still usually want to take a nap on my head at night. Obviously. They also love climbing on ou
