100 Reasons to Never Get Off the Couch

A few days ago hubby and I decided to try out a different kind of workout. I've seen the "100 Workout" going around on Pinterest, but I was eager to modify it a little. Here's what we ended up doing:

100 Jumping Jacks
90 Ab Exercises (Crunches, leg lifts, etc.)
80 Squats (Sumo and standard squats)
70 Jumping Jacks
60 Ab Exercises
50 Walking Lunges
40 Squats
30 Push-ups
20 Teasers (Abs)
10 Burpees
1 Plank to Exhaustion

Even though it only 25 minutes to complete, I was EXHAUSTED. Like, could barely get out of bed the next morning. Same for hubby. Every muscle in my body hurt. What more could you ask for in an at home workout that kicks your butt and requires no equipment?

In the opposite approach to...say, 95% of America, I still haven't worked out yet this year. 2 rest days in a row is pretty unusual for me but my ankle hurts, my legs are sore and I'm just not excited about it. So there you go. Rest it is.

Thanks to the Foodbuzz Tastemaker program, I was sent a coupon for some Marzetti Simply Dressed salad dressing. I stuck it in my wallet and planned to pick it up whenever I saw it in the grocery store. I finally found it next to the lettuce. What? Apparently it's too cool to hang out in the salad dressing aisle. I chose the pomegranate flavor:

I stuck my finger in the bottle to try it (no shame here) and was shocked. The stuff is SWEET. One of the main ingredients is orange juice concentrate, so I'm guessing that gives it a lot of that sweetness. Surprisingly though, it was really tasty on the salad.  They had a champagne flavor as well, which I would probably get next time instead. Booze salads just sound exciting, don't they?

Tonight's dinner: salad with lettuce, cucumber, carrots, tomatoes, celery, almonds and mozzarella cheese. On the side: breadsticks and shrimp.

P.S. - I use the word "breadsticks" very loosely. It actually means cut up a roll that is kind of old and toast in the oven. Feel fancy.

I don't even care that the shrimp weren't completely defrosted when we ate them. Just dunk in that cocktail sauce. So tasty.

What's your favorite salad dressing?
Balsamic vinaigrette all the way. I make a mean at home version, but to be honest I usually just buy a bottle of it. Sometimes I'll just spoon on salsa instead for some flavor.

Shrimp fan or foe?
Such a fan of shrimp. Normally I skip it because I'm cheap, but it's still basically the holidays right? Maybe? Plus shrimp dipped in cocktail sauce makes me feel like I'm at a cocktail party. Even if I'm sitting on my couch watching Jeopardy.

  3. I laughed at "Booze salads just sound exciting, don't they?"

Now, I want your mean at-home version of balsamic vinaigrette recipe. :) My bf loves that stuff. I may actually score some brownie points!

  4. That workout does look like it hurts!!! BUT, I think I'll have to try it! :)
AND I love shrimp. Now I totally want to run to the grocery store and get me a tray!

  5. Booze salad sounds delicious, and I'm totally going to do that workout this week. Awesome.

  6. I'm a balsamic vinaigrette person too. With all salad dressings, 90% of the time, I just use the bottled stuff...every once in awhile, I'll make one and it tastes so much better. They're easy, not sure why I keep buying the stuff!

  7. Even before I went vegetarian, I wouldn't touch seafood with a 10-foot pole! The smell alone makes me nauseous.

My favorite salad dressing is made by Annie's Naturals. It's called "Goddess." IT'S AWESOME. And vegan! But I often do what you said, too--salsa!

  8. I'm pretty anti-sweet salad dressings as a general rule. I agree with Pam - Annie's Goddess dressing is pretty stellar, though I tend to stick with salsa or vinaigrette - or tahini dressing at the Whole Foods salad bar.

  9. me too! I haven't worked out either:P boooo

man that 100 workout looks amazing. I'm gonna try it. Also that dressing looks good but the only time I LOVED shrimp was when I was pregnant :) lol that and milk....I'd drink it straight out of the carton.

  10. I am definitely going to try that workout! Seems intense!

I'm not too big on salads unless they're taco salads! And then the best topping is GUAC! I just started eating fish and haven't made it to the shrimp...I don't know if I ever will. I ate it once because Dean bet me and it was a terrible experience!

  11. Love the shrimp and we eat them almost still frozen too... better texture I think.

I love balsamic vinegar dressings and if you wan to get fancy mix the EFOO and white balsamic vinegar with chopped cilantro, lemon juice and a bit of crushed minced garlic.

But ya both have to eat it!

    :)

  12. That dang tastemaker program! i have been trying to get with it for 2 months and never get a response.

  13. HA!
I haven't worked out yet this year either!

I just finished a 40-something day running streak... My body needs a rest! I was out for an afternoon stroll today and saw dozens of "resolution exercisers" out there. (I live in a small neighborhood. I know the "regulars.") By next week, unfortunately, the newbies will all be gone. But I do hold out hope that some of them will stick with it!

  14. My favorite way to dress salads is just balsamic vinegar, because it's light and yummy! But, my favorite dressing is Marzetti Blue Cheese Italian, it is amazing but so fattening!!
I want to try the 100 workout, I love those type of workouts!

  15. were in the same boat. im stuck to cross training since i sprained my ankle. no running and welcoming 2012 in full force

  16. I don't know which I want to try first the workout or the shrimp for dinner. Bri's Bday is tomorrow and I know his folks are bringing dinner but maybe I can suprise him with the shrimp tonight!! So gotta have it now even though I just had it on NYE!! :)

I am also still injured but I am walking/jogging in the new year. A slow start so far but I got a lot of biking miles in!

  17. I can't stand sweet salad dressings, so that wouldn't be for me. Goddess dressing from Trader Joes is good enough to eat with a spoon. I love shrimp, and if you buy it from Costco, it's pretty cheap. Sometimes we all just need a break, especially those of us who are generally pretty active. Just rest and enjoy it!

  18. I kind of wish every muscle in my body hurt from working out. Sometimes I miss being sore. I think that also makes me semi-insane.

I rarely eat salads, but when I do, I usually just throw on some balsamic and vinegar.

    Definitely a shrimp fan.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I should try that workout sometime!

I don't like shrimp, I actually don't eat any seafood. Which is kind of funny since my dad is a lobsterman, oh well!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Big shrimp fan here! I'm not sure if I'd be a fan of that workout though. It looks good, but 20 teasers would kill me! haha I think I'd need to take a couple breathers.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I love balsamic vinaigrette too! And I have all these recipes to make my own dressings, but I normally buy it as well :) And I looooooove shrimp, it's one of my favorite foods!

Way to go on that workout, sounds killer!

    ReplyDelete
  22. is the foot totally better? I see your 12 week plan, just wondering if everything is all peachy :)

i love shrimp...don't buy it much because I kind of forget about it

    ReplyDelete
  23. The workout sounds so fun I love it!!! My favorite dressing is definitely ranch. Yes I know it is laced with about a billion calories but I love it. :D

    ReplyDelete
  24. An old cut up roll and half frozen shrimp? You know how to live the high life. :)

I might actually try that workout. Maybe. I don't like counting past 20 though, I'm lazy.

  25. Great workout! Didn't know you could find that kind of thing on Pinterest.

    Love balsamic vinegarette!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Salsa verde is my favorite salad dressing. Salty and tangy and awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  27. pomegranite dressing sounds soooo yummy! but i am not so much into super sweet salad dressings. i love lite raspberry vinaigrette. my absolute fave!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Hubby and I are SO stealing your 100 workout! Woohoo, I wanna be so sore that my legs can't move in the morning, I haven't felt that way in a while :(

Mmm, the booze salad! Not sure I'd like the sweet dressing.

We love shrimp around here...how can we possibly live on the Gulf Coast and not LOVE it?!

    ReplyDelete
  29. oh man i love shrimp like none other!!!! i eat them as much as possible, but seriously they need to not cost so much!! haha.

great workout to u and the hubs!! ya, all those burpees and squat jumps will get u puffing in about two seconds! keep it up! :)

  30. OMG I NEED to try that workout.. it sounds insane... and FUN LOL... maybe I could do it on my lunch hour here at work... hmmmm I can go into an empty office, stealth style!

LOVE shrimp... love love love!!! Could eat that whole platter and be happy :)

  31. favorite dressing: blue cheese, though it's hard to find without MSG so I do without it. . . next best if the ranch dressing from the restaurant down the street and yes, you can order a pint to go. YUM. Gluten Free and MSG free.

Shrimpies all the way, though we are picky, we only buy the ones that are shrimp (maybe salt) frozen, we don't get the ones with the added ingredient of TSP (can't spell the long name, but since we use it to clean walls before painting, I don't think it's a good idea to ingest it, even in small doses.)

    ReplyDelete
  32. Well...I did the workout. That's a butt kicker. Thanks for sharing!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I want to try that 100 workout. Doubt that I would be able to complete in 25 minutes though.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I'm thinking that I could use this workout as one of my 12 for the cross training challenge!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I've tried raspberry, but never pomegranate dressing. I think my favorite of alllll time is French. Disgusting orange color and all :-)

    ReplyDelete
  36. The simply dressed balsamic is really sweet, but the Greek is yummy. I prefer a little tang to my dressings

Race the Bar 5k Recap (AKA: A Personal Worst!)

Do you remember a few weeks back, when I was all braggy about running in Florida in February/March? Sunny mornings around a lake with a light breeze off the water have turned, cruelly, into humid stretches of time where I am humbly reminded of my own limitations. You guys, I see these gazelle-like creatures, men and women alike, who prance on my running route with compression socks, a soft glow of perspiration at their brow. It's beautiful. It's also a harsh reminder that I am not them. I am currently running in the thinnest, smallest items of clothing I can without offending anyone (shirt stays on, people). I dare not step outside without some awful visor or wide-brimmed hat. When I hop in the shower after a run, my face is a deep crimson that causes my husband to voice his concern for my general well-being. Have I mentioned this is what happens after my easy runs, with a few walk breaks thrown in? Yeah. It's humbling. Now, I'm not complaining. It's beautiful...

Brace Yourselves: Cuteness is Coming

One of the hardest things about moving, for me, was wondering how the cats would adjust each time. Although our cats are super travelers at this stage, I feel really guilty every time we have to pack them up and force them onto a plane. I remember my grandma telling me years ago that when she moved with a cat, they put butter on their paws. That way, the cats spent the first day in a new house licking their paws to get them clean, and that was enough time to lose the "smell" of the old house. I love that story, and I wish the same principle applied to longer moves. Anyway, that's a super long intro to say that for the fellow cat ladies out there, our three fur babies are insanely happy in this jungle gym of a home here in Florida. It's warm, there are plenty of sunny spots to curl up a take a nap, and they have lots of room to spread out. Despite the space, of course, they still usually want to take a nap on my head at night. Obviously. They also love climbing on ou...

Chobani Review and Giveaway!

I'm pretty sure it's not a secret that me and Greek yogurt are in a serious relationship. I know, I know...hubby can read this. But he's well aware of the affair. At least once a day I need my fix. Sometimes it's a mid-morning snack with fruit, or a lunchtime topper for baked potatoes. Other times it's the sweet dessert topped with fruit and chocolate shavings that completes my night. Plain, vanilla, fruity...I could wax poetic about the stuff for ages. Don't worry, I won't. What I will say is that as much as I love Greek yogurt, I figured it was all the same. I saved a little money (18 cents on each container at my local store) in order to get the cheaper no-name brand. Then Chobani was on sale, so I picked up a few. Um, this stuff is THICK! So much creamier and thicker - and tastier - than any other brand I've tried. Sorry, extra 18 cents. You are now being diverted to my Chobani fund. I won a Chobani giveaway a couple of weeks ago hosted by ...
