I apologize if there are geriatric readers who don't appreciate a death reference in the title. Maybe I should rephrase it? Fine. Here are 100 things to eat before you turn 100! Perfect.

I've seen this list floating around online and I keep looking at it and trying to see how many of these 100 foods I have eaten. Rest assured, I have not. I tried to trace the list back to the source and I'm not sure where it began, honestly. It seems to be most popular HERE on Facebook so I'll link it up and feel good about not stealing content. Done. I really like how the list is pretty international. However, there seems to be nothing from Africa? Maybe goat? Seems like a pretty big continent to leave out, but whatever. There are also a couple of things I have never even heard of  on this list: Phaal, Fugu and Frito Pie. I have this feeling that anything with the name Frito in it is an American invention. Must Google.

Reading through this list brought back some funny memories (ahem, eating snake) but one that stood out what when my mom and stepdad got married when I was about...10? My stepdad is German and we were out in rural Germany for their honeymoon. Yes, they brought three young children on their honeymoon. Anyway, he bought a rabbit and skinned it to make rabbit stew. We were all fine with it until he put the skin on his hand like a puppet and gave it a voice. Not kidding:
"Hi! I'm mister rabbit and you are going to eat me for dinner. Yay!"

Needless to say I was not a fan. And I'm pretty sure we all burst into tears and refused to eat. Good times, good times.

How many of those things on the list have you eaten? Which ones would you NEVER eat?
I've eaten 73/100. I think I will forever skip sweetbreads, haggis, crickets and durian. Thanks.

What would top your list of things to eat before you die?
Too stereotypical if I say frozen yogurt? Tough. It's amazing. Also, the beef wellington I made over Christmas.

  1. Goat is delicious. So is nettle tea, if made fresh. SO GOOD.

Frito pie is, I think, fritos with shit dumped on them?

I don't even know what half this stuff is. But Hostess Fruit Pie? Should not be on the list.

  2. Frito pie is amazing.

I love that you've eaten fucking kangeroo but not a Hostess Fruit pie.

Also, you've probably eaten shark and not known it. It's a very common "fake" swordfish.

  3. Love this! I was forced to try sweetbreads once, and I was very pleasantly surprised. I would definitely try it again :)

You have eaten alot of things I've never even heard of, hehe.

  4. Frito Pie

Fritos topped with chili of some short, and then taco toppings. Good shit.

So many of those things I have never heard of.

  5. Great minds think alike today...
Phaal is a very spicy Indian curry. I had to look up umeboshi, too - then realized I used to eat those little plums ALL THE TIME in college. I just didn't know what they were called. ;)

And I agree about the variety in the list. It seems U.S. southern-centric (c'mon... po'boys, fried green tomatoes, squirrel, frito pie, AND fried catfish), and has very little from Africa or eastern Europe (no injera? no stuffed cabbage?).

    My total: 85

  6. There are some interesting things on that list! I don't think I have tried more than half, I better get busy!

    ReplyDelete
  7. You need to go to a gas station asap and get a hostess fruit pie!! Love them for how bad they are for you!

    ReplyDelete
  8. I am not an adventurous eater and that is reflected in the 23 items I HAVE consumed on this list.
You really aren't missing out with Frito Pie.

    Too heavy!

    ReplyDelete
  9. I've only eaten 10.....shit. I've got some work to do.

    ReplyDelete
  10. You're cleaning up on that list! I like to think I'll eat anything but I'm not sure I've encountered a lot of these foods!

    ReplyDelete
  11. Oh, I think I need to do this on my blog!

Steak tartare, only by accident. The place served a meal at the same time to everyone in the restaurant and we weren't sure if I could ask for the Elk to be cooked more done or not. . . so I just ate a very small portion of the outside and then took the rest home in a foil package :-) . . . we also went to a movie afterwards and both of us ate plenty from the concession stand, ha ha.

I use to love Beef Wellington. Sampled plenty of great food when I catered in college :-)

  12. Wow nice job on the list. I haven't eaten a lot of those things. Although I will say that I have eaten some really gnarly things in china that I would never eat again.

I don't know what would be on the top of my list. I would really have to think about it.

And you have to try sweetbreads. They are delish!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Frito pie is just chili over fritos...pretty tasty. No MOON PIE!? Girl get your self to the corner store for a moon pie. you live in the SOUTH for goodness sake!

    ReplyDelete
  14. i am agreeing with wymberley…was about to give you an explanation on the frito pie an and be SHOCKED that you haven’t had a moonpie. but i grew up in mobile and we “throw them” at mardi gras. and chile rellenos is amazing. order it next you are out for mexican. :) oh, and so is pineapple and cottage cheese :)

    ReplyDelete
  15. considering i don't like seafood... there goes a good chunk of the list. SUPER impressed with all that you HAVE eaten.... much braver palette than my own.

    ReplyDelete
  16. This is such a cool list!! I'm not a very adventurous eater so I won't even tell you how few items I can check off this list O_O

    ReplyDelete
  17. omgbeefwellington.

doing this on my blog. no questions. oh man.

    ReplyDelete
  18. i had to look up a few, but i definitely would eat them all! when i was in africa, i ate random meat, which i fee like was dog. eeek! i know. But i did like their coffee, does that make the list?

    ReplyDelete
  19. um, i can't believe double stuffed oreos aren't on the list? hello?

the only thing i would absolutely never, ever, ever, ever try on that list is spam. just saying the word makes me shudder: spam. nasty. NASTY.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I have eaten 27/100. I am a very picky eater and should probably try new things. I don't like seafood so that is not ever going to happen but neither will snails, squirrels or crickets!!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Eff the list. I want that beef wellington. Oh and I am relieved to see s'mores on there. Amen

    ReplyDelete
  22. Omg how do you live in Georgia and have never heard of a frito pie!!!

    lol. fun list.

    ReplyDelete
  23. You are one BRAVE soul!! I don't even think i have eaten a quarter of those things! It doesn't help that I'm not a huge fan of meat or seafood though... A SQUIRREL?!?! You are crayyyyyzy!

I don't know what would top my list...there are so many things! My mom's pizza, my grandmother's rice balls (have you tried these?? They're called arancini in Italian. Basically balls of rice, cheese, and tomato sauce dipped in egg and coated with breadcrumbs and then deep fried - sooo good but sooo bad!). Hmm also cheesecake, carrot cake, and BBQ chips. I would obviously get really fat before I died!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I've had 45 of them, which is actually more than I thought I would have eaten. I haven't traveled much and have only lived in the midwest, thus making adventurous eating a little harder. :)

I wouldn't eat any of the mushroom ones because I can't stand mushrooms. bleck!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Wow! I am surprised that I have had 61 for sure and iffy on a couple of others... fun quizz that's for sure!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I can't believe your from SA! I have been reading your blog for a while after I saw a comment on Liz's blog. Do you ever come back? Are your parents South African?

I agree there is not much African stuff on the list. Where is the ostrich? boerewors? Bunny Chow?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Um that rabbit puppet? I die. Ahahahahahaha!

I didn't count, but I've eaten quite a bit of this stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I'm listening to Elvis Duran right now and they are talking about this! lol

    ReplyDelete
  29. i love these lists that keep popping up on FB. so fun. i think i did it a few weeks ago and was closer to maybe 50 of them? im not very risky when it comes to food...must get better in the future :)

    ReplyDelete
  30. I've eaten SO MANY fewer things than you have. This list reminds me of the menus on "Top Chef". I don't even know what most of the things are!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Oh wow you totally have me beat. I have literally maybe eaten 10 things on the list. I am such a creature of habbit and rarely try new things.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I laughed pretty hard when I saw Frito Pie on that list. My elementary school served it for lunch probably every other Friday. It is definitely a southwest kind of thing. I think I'd eaten about 65 of the things on the list.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I don't know what durian is but I wholeheartedly agree with your first three so I'll say hell no that that one too. I consider myself willing to try anything once but I have limits.

Everyone should have the cake I made for my birthday last year. Dessert is so important. I don't know what frito pie is, but I want it.

    1. NM just googled frito pie and it looks nasty. I thought it was a dessert.

  34. Durian is amazing! Love it!
    Really.
I will pass on crickets though.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I'm not sure I'll find myself in a position to eat squirrel...but I guess you never know. I guess I'm pretty "well eaten" since I'm just one behind you with 72.

My husband keeps seeing rabbit in the grocery store and saying he's going to make stew but so far he hasn't followed through. I refuse to allow him to make it a puppet though...

    ReplyDelete
  36. You live in the land of moon pies, get on that!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I'm SUCH a picky eater that hardly any of those foods would appeal to me. However at my work last summer, we sold these novelty packages of flavored crickets (salt and vinegar, sour cream and onion, bacon and cheddar, etc) and I got paid one dollar to eat one. So I did. Never again!

Oh and I love how you are still using Christmas napkins. Ho ho ho.

    ReplyDelete
  38. funy. I have never had moon pies or chicken and waffles. Yet...rabbit and kangaroo I have ingested! I think the first two must be American treats. I may have to do a post on this too! love it. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  39. your are so beatifull

    ReplyDelete
  40. Superb blog, i love this blog. All the food are must to have before you die.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Nice thought, yeah we should eat this food before we die.

Race the Bar 5k Recap (AKA: A Personal Worst!)

Do you remember a few weeks back, when I was all braggy about running in Florida in February/March? Sunny mornings around a lake with a light breeze off the water have turned, cruelly, into humid stretches of time where I am humbly reminded of my own limitations. You guys, I see these gazelle-like creatures, men and women alike, who prance on my running route with compression socks, a soft glow of perspiration at their brow. It's beautiful. It's also a harsh reminder that I am not them. I am currently running in the thinnest, smallest items of clothing I can without offending anyone (shirt stays on, people). I dare not step outside without some awful visor or wide-brimmed hat. When I hop in the shower after a run, my face is a deep crimson that causes my husband to voice his concern for my general well-being. Have I mentioned this is what happens after my easy runs, with a few walk breaks thrown in? Yeah. It's humbling. Now, I'm not complaining. It's beautiful

1st Wedding Anniversary--Celebrating with Chocolate!

One year ago today, I married the love of my life. And I couldn't be happier! In celebration of our very first anniversary, here are some pictures of our favorite moments together: Our first trail race together Hiking together in GA And of course, our wonderful wedding in Hong Kong. We both decided to keep things very simple, with a casual ceremony with a few friends and family and then lunch at the Mandarin Oriental. Exactly what I wanted! With our parents after making it official! Our entire wedding party. Just family and dear friends! Goofing around with my garter at the reception lunch! You think you know what couples do after they get married? You know, their first night at man and wife? If you guessed eat ridiculously delicious chocolates in their bed at the Grand Hyatt, you're right.  Oh, I haven't changed. One year later and I still celebrate with sweet things! Thanks Tim, for being a wonderful husband. I love you!

Brace Yourselves: Cuteness is Coming

One of the hardest things about moving, for me, was wondering how the cats would adjust each time. Although our cats are super travelers at this stage, I feel really guilty every time we have to pack them up and force them onto a plane. I remember my grandma telling me years ago that when she moved with a cat, they put butter on their paws. That way, the cats spent the first day in a new house licking their paws to get them clean, and that was enough time to lose the "smell" of the old house. I love that story, and I wish the same principle applied to longer moves. Anyway, that's a super long intro to say that for the fellow cat ladies out there, our three fur babies are insanely happy in this jungle gym of a home here in Florida. It's warm, there are plenty of sunny spots to curl up a take a nap, and they have lots of room to spread out. Despite the space, of course, they still usually want to take a nap on my head at night. Obviously. They also love climbing on ou
