House Update!

I'm moving my long run to tomorrow since I'm working today, so in the meantime I thought I would update you all with my house progress!
If you didn't know, hubs and I moved from Hong Kong six months ago to build our dream house in Georgia. We came with the goal of building a modern and energy efficient home on our land. Well, a little bit of time later (and a lot of extra cash later) than we expected, but it's nearly done!

I love this house! What makes it so special for me is that hubs designed the entire thing himself, from the layout to the materials to the roof heights. Truly one of a kind! The house itself is completely finished, painting, and air-conditioned (woo-hoo) but there's that small issue of furniture. Although at this point, I'm pretty ok with sleeping on the floor!

The kitchen is completely from Ikea--cabinets, appliances, the whole kit and caboodle. Here's the most recent picture, but more has been done since then:

The countertops have been measured and will arrive in a week or so--I can't wait! We have a (completely unassembled and in boxes) couch and bed, so we're getting there. For some reason I have to wait to buy a treadmill until there are things like toilets and tables. Lame, I know. OBVIOUSLY I would rather run sheltered from the Georgia summer heat than eat off a table.

Tomorrow I'm going to be sneaky and do a trial session at a local gym I have absolutely no intention of joining. I just want to run my 17 miles in air conditioning! Hopefully they don't think I'm crazy when I turn the "free trial" into a 3 hour run fest. Wish me luck--17 miles is my longest run ever!

Have you ever used a gym's free trial before joining, or just because?
I usually use the free trial even if I know I like it, to save a bit of money. There are a few gyms around me though, I might as well try them all out for free, right?

What could you not live without, if you were getting ready to move into a new house?
No bed? Ok, mattresses or sleeping bags will do. No oven? Sandwiches and salads are fine. Toilets? I draw the line at toilet people. That's gross.

  16. haha i need a toilet too. i lived without a microwave for a month and just baked everything that was frozen or needed heating up. I need running water and preferably a mattress. I sit on the floor way too often to think a couch is necessary though.

I'm glad your house is coming along so well! Enjoy your free gym day )crazy gym lady) ;)

  18. Your house is beautiful.

When I was training for a marathon in the dead of winter in UT I totally went to two different gyms for trial memberships so I could run inside. I finally just bought a treadmill.

I can't live without dental floss and a ton of other things.

  23. Your house looks beautiful! That is so awesome you guys designed and built everything yourselves, I would love to build my dream house someday.

I have used a free gym pass with no intention of joining. But then I had to deal with the annoying sales calls for a few weeks after. Next time I won't give them my cell phone number :)

  38. I love the house pics so far! Can't wait to see more. Keep us posted!

I was supposed to use the trial membership and ended up getting talking into signing up. For me it was a wasted memebership because the gym was 20 minutes away and at the time I was working nights. It was hard for me to drag myself to a workout when I was so ready for bed.

Race the Bar 5k Recap (AKA: A Personal Worst!)

Do you remember a few weeks back, when I was all braggy about running in Florida in February/March? Sunny mornings around a lake with a light breeze off the water have turned, cruelly, into humid stretches of time where I am humbly reminded of my own limitations. You guys, I see these gazelle-like creatures, men and women alike, who prance on my running route with compression socks, a soft glow of perspiration at their brow. It's beautiful. It's also a harsh reminder that I am not them. I am currently running in the thinnest, smallest items of clothing I can without offending anyone (shirt stays on, people). I dare not step outside without some awful visor or wide-brimmed hat. When I hop in the shower after a run, my face is a deep crimson that causes my husband to voice his concern for my general well-being. Have I mentioned this is what happens after my easy runs, with a few walk breaks thrown in? Yeah. It's humbling. Now, I'm not complaining. It's beautiful

1st Wedding Anniversary--Celebrating with Chocolate!

One year ago today, I married the love of my life. And I couldn't be happier! In celebration of our very first anniversary, here are some pictures of our favorite moments together: Our first trail race together Hiking together in GA And of course, our wonderful wedding in Hong Kong. We both decided to keep things very simple, with a casual ceremony with a few friends and family and then lunch at the Mandarin Oriental. Exactly what I wanted! With our parents after making it official! Our entire wedding party. Just family and dear friends! Goofing around with my garter at the reception lunch! You think you know what couples do after they get married? You know, their first night at man and wife? If you guessed eat ridiculously delicious chocolates in their bed at the Grand Hyatt, you're right.  Oh, I haven't changed. One year later and I still celebrate with sweet things! Thanks Tim, for being a wonderful husband. I love you!

Brace Yourselves: Cuteness is Coming

One of the hardest things about moving, for me, was wondering how the cats would adjust each time. Although our cats are super travelers at this stage, I feel really guilty every time we have to pack them up and force them onto a plane. I remember my grandma telling me years ago that when she moved with a cat, they put butter on their paws. That way, the cats spent the first day in a new house licking their paws to get them clean, and that was enough time to lose the "smell" of the old house. I love that story, and I wish the same principle applied to longer moves. Anyway, that's a super long intro to say that for the fellow cat ladies out there, our three fur babies are insanely happy in this jungle gym of a home here in Florida. It's warm, there are plenty of sunny spots to curl up a take a nap, and they have lots of room to spread out. Despite the space, of course, they still usually want to take a nap on my head at night. Obviously. They also love climbing on ou
