My Thighs Must Love Each Other...

...because they are ALWAYS hanging out. Besties. Never leaving the other's side. I'm pretty fit, enjoy healthy meals, love to run...

And my thighs touch.

left thigh.right thigh
super.close.together.

In high school, I would thumb through clothing catalogs and try to understand how in the H-E-double hockey sticks I could have legs that didn't touch. I blame Victoria's Secret models for my teenage obsession with getting the thighs to separate.

I blame her.
I remember my mom once telling me that thighs weren't supposed to be apart. They were supposed to touch at the top. Ok mom, whatever. You find me a 15 year old girl who listen to what her mother says about body image.

So why did this random thigh topic come up today? Well, today I had another run on my treadmill. I busted out some new shorts that haven't been worn in close to a year, and did 6 tempo miles:

While running, my thighs were literally "eating" my shorts. You know the feeling? Where they start riding up in the front-heading somewhere we don't talk about on this blog?

Well today, instead of thinking..."geez, these thighs!" I though..."gotta get some new shorts!" Because these thighs aren't going anywhere. And they're not supposed to. I love 'em.

Good thing, too, because I'm not about to stop eating the delicious meals I have been making lately. Some of yesterday's eats--
Exhibit A: gluten-free pasta with veggie sausage, tomato sauce, broccoli and parmesan cheese:

Exhibit B: baked potatoes with greek yogurt, black pepper, broccoli and parmesan cheese.

Do you use greek yogurt in place of sour cream? Any advice/suggestions?
I usually make my greek yogurt with fruit, cereal or sweeter mix-ins, but this was perfect! Even hubs loaded up with lots of yogurt and said it was just like sour cream. P.S.--this might seem obvious, but genius over here opened up vanilla. Not so much. Always use plain!

Are you a genetically blessed freak whose thighs don't touch, or one of the real people?!
Oh, I'm joking! I know we all come in different shapes and if your thighs don't touch, more power to you. No hate mail please. As for me, they touch all right. I think I would have to positively skeletal to get them apart.

  1. I hate it when my shorts ride up from my thighs..I am blessed with having all my weight go to my lower body. I have thick legs and stick like arms lol.
I use greek yogurt in place of sour cream all the time. I much prefer it more though with my oats and peanut butter.

  2. You know I think it's just a genetics thing. Cause I'm fairly trim, but where I have extra is all in my thighs. Oh yeah and no boobs. WTF?! But I have a ton of friends packing double D's and beer guts, and their chicken legs don't touch either. Total bull.

  3. Dear lord my thighs are constantly smushing into each other. My shorts get eaten all the time unless I wear something spandex with an inseam longer than 4 inches. Totally sucks, and it's been like that regardless of whatever weight I've been at. I still think that those stupid images are something I'm supposed to have and I never will. Really frustrating, even at the ripe old age of 31.

  4. my thighs are in constant contact. my running solution? runningskirts.com skirts. they have the briefs. at first i thought it would be disaster. but i ust the same amount of body glide as i ever did with shorts and i have never looked back :)

  5. Oh my thighs touch and always have. Even when I weighted 90 lbs in high school they still touched. :) They love each other.

I have learned the same thing - just buy different shorts cause there is nothing I can do about my chub rub!

    ReplyDelete
  6. haha I meant weighed, not weighted. duh.

  7. yum greek yoghurt instead of sour cream on baked potatoes! im gunna have to try that one!

as for my thighs, yep they touch (just) and im totally ok with that. miranda kerr is the devil! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  8. Oh my thighs definitely touch! I remember a girl on my cheerleading squad sophomore year of high school was telling us all that we were considered 'overweight' by some study if our thighs touched. No wonder I was so self-conscious! Now I love my thunder thighs.

And yes, greek yogurt for sour cream! Just did that yesterday with some twice-baked potatoes. :-)

  9. My thighs have always touched and always will...short of plastic surgery anyway. I try to work on my quads and calves so I don't look like a complete marshmallow.

    ReplyDelete
  10. This post made me laugh. The same thing happens to me, which is why I turn to yoga pants. These are really comfortable and you never have to worry about thighs eating them. lol :)

    ReplyDelete
  11. My thighs don't touch.

If my feet are about 2 feet apart. Which is how a lot of models make that gap appear. It's not real.

p.s. body glide. it's your friend

    ReplyDelete
  12. I've heard of using greek yogurt instead of sour cream, but I use sour cream so infrequently I haven't had a chance to try it. Can't wait to hear what you come up with.

My thighs definitely touch, I don't mind unless there's chafing. That's why I go for compression shorts on long runs.

    ReplyDelete
  13. too funny about the thighs, was actually running today in a running skirt minus shorts, the whole time I kept thinking "and this is why I wear shorts so I don't feel the rub" My thighs have always touched... even in 8th grade when I was 5'10 120lbs--- still touched :)

    ReplyDelete
  14. Oh man I thought this was going to be one of those sad, negative body image posts and you were upset that your thighs touched... I'm so happy I'm wrong! lol My mom told me the same thing, too. I bet you those girls with the chicken legs in magazines can't run nearly as far as you anyway :p

greek yogurt > sour cream :D

    ReplyDelete
  15. My thighs touch too hence why I never ever wear shorts. I have just told myself that since I'm a runner I'm going to have big thighs.

    ReplyDelete
  16. yup... thighs touch. Im sure your hubby loves your thighs! My husband says skinny legs are no bueno, lol. Glad you are liking your treadmill!

    ReplyDelete
  17. This post cracked me up! My thighs have been permanently bonded since birth. I'm surprised sparks don't fly out of them when I walk.

    ReplyDelete
  18. My thighs will always touch! Always!!! The End. :)

    ReplyDelete
  19. Love Greek yogurt and I use it in place of sour cream for everything now!

    ReplyDelete
  20. My thighs touch! There are just some shorts we gotta avoid!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Oh my God, we are twins. A few years ago during my first year as an XC coach, I said to my co-coach, "I don't understand why these girls wear tiny shorts. Don't they get chafing between their thighs?" And my very-fit-endurance-athlete-superfreak co-coach said to me, "Um.. my thighs don't touch when I run". From then on, the kids called me Thunder Thighs or TSquared. This actually happened. I'm totally doing a post on this same thing.
I use greek yogurt instead of sour cream! I tried using it when serving fajitas and chili on 2 nights, but they didn't really seem to go for it. One day, it will happen!
P.s. Check out my page for a surprise :)

  22. Ha! I LOVE this post!
My thighs love each other more and more as I get older. I'm cool with it. They carry me through my long runs. Who am I to complain?

For the ride-up shorts issue... Body Glide is my friend. It works like a charm.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I am weird. I have big thighs (seriously, they are only like 3" smaller than my waist) but they do not touch. I think it is because I have wide hips. When I run, they rub together, but when I stand up straight there is space between them.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I think my thighs touch! Some days they don't though haha. I've never had chafing between them. My body fluctuates about 5-7 pounds really easily/quickly so it really depends. At my "heaviest" I'd say they touch!

I have used Greek yogurts instead of sour cream! It tastes so much better. I have also used it as a base to make dip for veggies! So good :)

    ReplyDelete
  25. I am a Greek yogurt fanatic and I have my husband and toddler on board with my obsession. I use it in place of cream, sour cream, sub in half in lasagna for ricotta. Greek yogurt rocks my world.

I have to wear running capris because my thighs rub so bad I could start a fire in regular running shorts! And I eat balanced, am healthy, heck, ran 8 miles this morning. It's just my breed. My mother is freaky thin, did some modeling, but her tiny thighs touched.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I'm like you and usually mix my greek yogurt with fruit and stuff. Haven't tried it as sour cream yet, but that baked potato picture made me want to! I bet it's so good. I'm also like you in the thigh area. I loved this post. Living in this heat and humidity, I better make sure to put that body glide on or else I'll have some sore thighs after my run!

    ReplyDelete
  27. that "model" is some kind of mutant

    ReplyDelete
  28. haha funny post! I thought the same thing when I was a girl! Stupid models with ridiculously skinny legs. :)

    ReplyDelete
  29. haha, think my thighs will ALWAYS rub :(

yes, we use greek yogurt instead of sour cream all the time! mix a dry, ranch packet with plain greek yogurt and it'll taste even better for parties/showers/whatever...and people won't even know the difference!

    ReplyDelete
  30. My thighs touch! I use greek yogurt for everything. I even substituted it in potato salad and it turned out really well. I also have been using it to make creamy salad dressings. Well, it's not real greek yogurt but same calories/consistency. :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. Ha. That is an exact text that I sent my friend last night. "Oh, look. My thighs are BFF's again. Time to start cross training again."

    ReplyDelete
  32. Haha, my thighs loooooOOOOOOooove each other. :) Cracks me up.

    ReplyDelete
  33. my thighs are the biggest part of me... when I buy pants, they are always snug on my thighs, even if the waist is gaping out nearly 6 inches. But my thighs are my running powerhouses and I love 'em. :)

    ReplyDelete
  34. I always use light natural yoghurt instead of sour cream.
    Occasionally, Hubby doesn't even notice!
Unfortunately, my thighs are vERY well acquainted too.
I like to tell myself those drive through legs are photoshopped - right?!
    :-)

    ReplyDelete
  35. Victoria's Secret models aren't real people. They're models. There's a big difference! I'd love for my thighs to not touch, but I'm pretty sure that would involve me not eating, and that's just never gonna happen.

    ReplyDelete
  36. My thighs definitely touch- and I'm a pretty small person. I'm blessed with muscular thighs (my husband calls them tree trunk thighs- and he means that in a good way- they're solid and they are strong)and they touch. I'm ok with that. Except for when I have that same "shorts eating" problem. But I agree- that's the shorts, not my thighs that need to be changed.

    ReplyDelete
  37. No matter how much I run, my thighs definitely touch! I was not blessed with the long leg gene or skinny leg gene :)

I substitute greek yogurt for sour cream and it's great! I don't feel as though light sour cream is really all that bad for you, but you get the health benefits from the yogurt….and, most of the time, my hubby doesn't notice!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I always use greek yogurt in place of sourcream! :) I HATE the shorts eating problem!!!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I'd like to stand right beside you and agree x 444 it's totally VS's fault. ;)
    Loved
    This
    Post.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I posted about this a while back, and came up with this slogan: "Guys don't care if your thighs touch, they just want to touch your thighs."

    ReplyDelete
  41. Yeah, they totally touch. And this is the beauty of running skirts! You get the nice compression shorts that own't be eaten by your thighs and then the skirt to cover all that leg/thigh business!

    ReplyDelete
  42. umm that pasta? get in my belly!! Those meals look so good!!

I definitely have the thunder thighs of an athlete, always have. I remember in gymnastics when i was younger, my girlfriends would tease me about my thighs touching, because theirs didn't, or they had more space than mine. Well, you know what? I continued to stick to sports and a healthy lifestyle, and staying happy and healthy....they are both overweight, love their beer and can't run more than a couple of miles :)

I love my thighs, they are strong, and I think that is an awesome way to think about chafing...its not the thighs that need adjustment, its the shorts that need to go :)

    ReplyDelete
  43. I chafe horribly between my thighs on the trails because my stride is different, but not on road runs (and yes, they touch).

I'm cool with my thighs, but I do wish they could develop some callouses already. :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. I never thought of substituting greek yogurt for sour cream. What a fabulous idea! I was the same way in HS!! Now, I kind of don't care. It is what it is! :)

    ReplyDelete
  45. ha ha love this! My thighs are the bestest of friends and that is why glide is my best friend. Before I discovered glide I always ran in spandex.

All of the food looks delicious!!

    ReplyDelete
  46. my thighs will be huge for life. apparently its a "hubbard" thing...but i am thinking more of a curse. i do love them though. i never thought about substituting greek yogurt but seriously...genius! that TM is gorgeous. omg. ill prob dream about it again tonight. greeattt.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Love this post! I have narrow hips so my thighs will forever be touching.

I have definitely dealt with the whole 'the shorts are migrating to a place they should not be' issue and, yes, I finally stopped comparing myself to women that have wider hips and legs placed further apart.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Even looking at your trim fit picture, to know that your thighs touch, FINALLY (at 43yo) clues me in to the fact that nothing is wrong w/ me b/c my thighs touch!!
Even when I was in the best shape of my life at 21yo and was really muscular & fit, my thighs still touched & chafed & I thought "What is wrong w/ me?!" I thought my thighs were too big, and felt bad b/c I wasn't like those models.
Whew! You've given me inspiration to get out there & run...and not be disappointed that I never get to that "no touching thighs" place!

    ReplyDelete
  49. My thighs touch too! I'm so glad you brought this up-I was starting to think I was the only one who had problems with shorts riding up. I can only wear "cycling" shorts that are stuck to my legs!

    ReplyDelete
  50. I have the same thigh problem and they eat like every pair of shorts, which is why I have started to run in spandex and yoga pants (long and cropped) more lately. If you do find any regular shorts that your thighs don't eat, let me know, I'd be interested.

    Sincerely,

Another Pair of Short Eating Thighs :)

  51. between my butt and my thighs, my shorts are always riding where they dont belong. I've finally given into the spandex shorts which are awesome and don't go anywhere. when I was running 80 miles a week my thighs still touched. there's no hope for the wide open "thighway" (as we used to call it in highschool)

    ReplyDelete
  52. 51 comments lady wow! I guess people agree with you. I am in. It is hard to find the right shorts to deal with this issue and then bigger issue is when you go up or down a few pounds and now the shorts don't work. i body glide it up but sometimes that makes things all sticky and annoying seriously only good thing about winter weather is the pants rock!

    ReplyDelete
  53. Goodness I wish my thighs weren't BFF. It is so annoying. I started doing leg lifts with 2lb weights a few day ago. Will let you know if my thighs stop touching.......

  54. Nope, my thighs touch. I think it is physically impossible for me to lose enough weight so they don't. My shorts never ride up in the front, it is always the back. I think it is because God blessed me with an ample backside. This is also a feature I do not think I will ever lose with weight loss. We just have to love the bodies we have and listen to our moms when they say we are beautiful. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  55. I use greek yogurt and sour cream pretty interchangably... unless I'm eating it out of a bowl with a spoon, haha. Then the yogurt always wins!

    ReplyDelete
  56. Yes, I almost always sub Greek yogurt for sour cream! I have found in baking tho, it doesn't always work just right. Had a sad chocolate cake incident once.
And my thighs don't touch, you know, if I stand all awkwardly and let them airbrush the crud out of my photos!!!

    ReplyDelete
  57. my things touch but they didn't start to until I was 23....OH and just so you know VS is KNOWN for their CRAZY photoshopping.,

I think you will enjoy the 2nd photo....her thighs aren't touching - but they should be!!! lol

    ReplyDelete
  58. I've had a thigh complex forever! But I know my thighs will always touch. Even at my teeny tiniest weight my thighs touched. But they carry me through long runs, so I can't be too mad at them!

    ReplyDelete
  59. Oh my god how did I miss out on your blog this week??? My coworker asked me last year if my thighs touch, I was like "uh, ya" thinking "don't everybody's??" and she was like "oh, well mine don't". WTF?? We make fun of her all the time for that comment. In yoga, there are a bunch of model types where their thighs don't touch and I want to smash a sandwich in their face. You are totally normal! Way to embrace the way you are! Personally, I have no interest in my thighs not touching, it's just not an option in this lifetime.

    ReplyDelete
  60. this is such a rad post. And the craziest part is you have a truly beautiful bod, by any standard. if your thighs didn't touch, you'd be sick!

    ReplyDelete
  61. People of all sizes and fitness levels have this problem. I stopped wearing shorts until I could come up with a solution -- it took almost 10 years.

Check out PSST: Puts Shorts Straight Today -- a convenient, iron-in solution to shorts that ride up. Just trim them to the length of your inseam, peel off the paper backing, and iron them in. No more "crotch creep."

Race the Bar 5k Recap (AKA: A Personal Worst!)

Do you remember a few weeks back, when I was all braggy about running in Florida in February/March? Sunny mornings around a lake with a light breeze off the water have turned, cruelly, into humid stretches of time where I am humbly reminded of my own limitations. You guys, I see these gazelle-like creatures, men and women alike, who prance on my running route with compression socks, a soft glow of perspiration at their brow. It's beautiful. It's also a harsh reminder that I am not them. I am currently running in the thinnest, smallest items of clothing I can without offending anyone (shirt stays on, people). I dare not step outside without some awful visor or wide-brimmed hat. When I hop in the shower after a run, my face is a deep crimson that causes my husband to voice his concern for my general well-being. Have I mentioned this is what happens after my easy runs, with a few walk breaks thrown in? Yeah. It's humbling. Now, I'm not complaining. It's beautiful

1st Wedding Anniversary--Celebrating with Chocolate!

One year ago today, I married the love of my life. And I couldn't be happier! In celebration of our very first anniversary, here are some pictures of our favorite moments together: Our first trail race together Hiking together in GA And of course, our wonderful wedding in Hong Kong. We both decided to keep things very simple, with a casual ceremony with a few friends and family and then lunch at the Mandarin Oriental. Exactly what I wanted! With our parents after making it official! Our entire wedding party. Just family and dear friends! Goofing around with my garter at the reception lunch! You think you know what couples do after they get married? You know, their first night at man and wife? If you guessed eat ridiculously delicious chocolates in their bed at the Grand Hyatt, you're right.  Oh, I haven't changed. One year later and I still celebrate with sweet things! Thanks Tim, for being a wonderful husband. I love you!

Brace Yourselves: Cuteness is Coming

One of the hardest things about moving, for me, was wondering how the cats would adjust each time. Although our cats are super travelers at this stage, I feel really guilty every time we have to pack them up and force them onto a plane. I remember my grandma telling me years ago that when she moved with a cat, they put butter on their paws. That way, the cats spent the first day in a new house licking their paws to get them clean, and that was enough time to lose the "smell" of the old house. I love that story, and I wish the same principle applied to longer moves. Anyway, that's a super long intro to say that for the fellow cat ladies out there, our three fur babies are insanely happy in this jungle gym of a home here in Florida. It's warm, there are plenty of sunny spots to curl up a take a nap, and they have lots of room to spread out. Despite the space, of course, they still usually want to take a nap on my head at night. Obviously. They also love climbing on ou
