Five Guys and Kale Chips

After a day of lake awesomeness and 12 miles of running on Saturday, I was ready to collapse in a big old heap on Sunday. Managed a little catch up on work, lots of blogging, and very little leaving of the couch. Around 5 I was bribed with food convinced to get up and change out of sweatpants and head into town for dinner and a movie.

Hubs had never tried Five Guys before, so we had to go and try it out! I was very happy with mine....

You would be pretty happy too if you were eating one of the these guys. I ordered a "little hamburger" (um, it's not little) and hubs got the regular cheeseburger.

Burger with grilled onions, pickles, tomato, lettuce, ketchup.

Cheeseburger with lettuce, grilled onions, and ketchup.
With these massive burgers in our bellies we skipped the fries--even though they looked AMAZING! No worries though, I was able to make up for it today by making something crispy and salty for lunch. Cue kale chips!

I know, I know. I'm totally the first blogger who has ever made kale chips before, right? Oh well, I'm finally on the bandwagon now! These are amazing--I made them with a little olive oil, salt and pepper. Surprised me how quick they cooked up...maybe 10 minutes? They made a great side to my quesadilla!

Workout today was P90X Plyometrics---really felt it!

Have you been to Five Guys before? Best thing to order there?
I love the hamburgers, especially with great toppings! I'll be back soon for those fries....

Ever made kale chips before? Any interesting toppings?
So excited to have made them! I'm going to try them topped with fresh parmesan next, I feel like that would be delicious!

i've been IN five guys. walked in, read the menu, walked out. husband asked "wtf?" as i pulled his arm out the door. "there's nothing for me on the menu. they could at least have a grilled chicken sandwich or something." his response? "it's five guys BURGERS and FRIES!" so ... anywayz.

haven't tried the kale chips. i read nothing but raving reviews though so soon, very soon my friend.

  4. I make kale chips quite often. After I bake them and take them out of the oven I sprinkle them with freshly shredded parmesan cheese.

And I dip them in ketchup to eat them.

  5. Yum yum yuuuuummmmmers!! I totally miss Five Guys!! I think the bf and I went seriously went once a week when we lived the college life in Auburn...I always got the little cheeseburger--and we could never go w/o the fries!! The original are the best, but the cajun fries are good too! I'm so hungry..now I'm drooling. Perhaps I'll go make some kale chips since I've yet to attempt that...time to get on the bandwagon, right? haha =)

  6. I love 5 guys . . . and the fries are totally worth every calorie (though a small is a gigantic size that could feed a small nation). Ohhhh man, 5 Guys -YUM!

  9. when they opened up a five guys where i used to live the lines would go out the door, the place honestly looked like a phone booth crammed with about twenty people. people were raving about it, but i've never gone. why? well, i'm a freak and i'm not a hamburger fan...lol. but i hear the fries are worth going in for just by themselves so maybe i'll have to join the masses. :)

  12. Never been to Five Guys! I think they just recently opened up the first one here...we're a little behind!

I tried making kale chips once. I left them in a minute too long and the burnt to a crisp! I have to attempt it again. The store bought ones are so good but sooo expensive! About $7-$8 a bag!

  16. Just catching up on your blog, so be ready for about 230 comments. FIVE GUYS! I haven't tried it because I don't eat red meat, but it smells and looks like heaven. The fries on the other hand I can attest to... SOOOO GOOD.

  17. I still need to try those kale chips, they look so good! The only thing is my family probably wouldn't think they're too hot...oh well!

  18. You must try the fries next time! They may or may not cause some arteries to clog, but let me tell you, it is certainly worth it ;-)
Kale chips are great! I am pretty boring and usually only season them with a bit or olive oil and garlic, I need to change it up a bit!

  23. 5 Guys is SO GOOD! We have one in our area, and it is always jam packed. Like a line through the building, and sometimes out the door! Kale chips. Hmmm...I think I need to try them! Thank you for your comments on my blog!

  24. I've only had 5 Guys once, but it was really good. I wish you could get fries individually. I only wanted 5-10, not 200! Good call on the kale chips for a salt fix instead of the fries.

  25. For once, I can actually try a chain that an American blogger recommends! I recently learned that we have Five Guys here in Canada and my city has one- crazy :)

As for the kale chips, I don't know why I haven't tried them before. Even my mum makes and loves them...

Are You a Salty Sweater? The Truth About Sodium and Running

Before I started running regularly, I did my best to avoid salt. After all, if you want to lose weight you're supposed to reduce sodium, right? Here's what the American Federal Government's recommendations for sodium intake (as of January 2011)

-if you're 51+ years old, black, have hypertension, kidney disease or diabetes, you get 1,500 mg. each day
-if you're a healthy adult, you get 2,300 mg. per day. A teaspoon.

Now most of the time, I don't have an issue with this. Salt isn't used too much in my cooking, and I avoid a lot of common processed foods filled with sodium. When I do indulge in a salty meal, usually from a restaurant, I get the associated water weight gain and bloating. So I'm happy to stick to my meeting my 2,300 mg. requirements each day.

And then...summer arrives. If you're running in high humidity, you sweat. A lot. It's not pretty, and you're draining your body of electrolytes like sodium. On my long runs, I take precauti…

DIY Treadmill Desk

Working from home has its perks. Sure, my social interaction skills are deteriorating rapidly and casual dress Fridays now include those old ratty boxers and that one race shirt with the hole, but I also get to enjoy things like eating lunch at 10:30 because I feel like it and deciding where I want to work. Like on the treadmill.

Between working at my desk all day, using my computer for fun and then sitting on the couch watching television most nights for an hour or two, it's safe to say I sit on my ass a lot. And yep, that's not so great for you. Even though I work out 6 days a week, I hate that I spend easily 75% of my waking hours sitting.

On a whim, I asked Tim if he could build me a treadmill desk. I've seen these massive contraptions to make treadmill desks, but they basically transform it into a full-time desk, and I still want to use my treadmill for running (sans desk) as well. Magic carpenter man took a few measurements and brought me in a prototype by lunchtime.…

Most Controversial Post: My post Good Person > Good Racer was possibly the most controversial. I talked about my own experience racing with my husband, and whether or not it is racer etiquette (or just plain rude) to pass someone when you planned on running together.
