My Favorite Finger Foods (AKA I Eat Like a 7 Year Old)

If I'm completely honest, I'm a snacker. A muncher. A grazer. As much as I like sitting down to a delicious meal around the dining table, that just doesn't happen too often for me. Quick, simple meals are my speciality, and I happen to have a love for foods made for children. I love eating with my hands. I've decided to embrace that lately, by making meals that are essentially hearty snack combinations.

Plates like this one, with popcorn, hummus, cucumber slices, and some sliced ham, are perfect for me. And if you haven't tried dipping popcorn into hummus, you are missing out big time. DELISH. Or yesterday's combination of roasted sweet potatoes, kale chips, and toasted corn tortillas:

On a side note, I love my kale chips extra crispy. Which means that twice this week, I've set off the fire alarm when pulling them out of the oven. Seriously? That alarm must be crazy sensitive because we're not even talking smoke here. Reminds me of when my grandma used to turn on the oven, leave everything going, and then when the smoke alarm went off she would scream, "Supper!

We have another house guest staying with us as of yesterday--one of hubby's good friends who lives in England. I'll be honest and say that the thought of two 30-ish guys in my house worries me, and I foresee  epic midnight video game battles and long fishing trips in my immediate future. I don't mind though, I'll just remind hubby of that when I invite 27 of my blog friends over for trail runs and fro-yo. Sounds fair to me. To be fair, our guest did bring two giant bags of Cadbury's chocolate with him when he arrived, so he's already a great visitor in my book!

Do you ever set the fire alarm off cooking? Please say it happens to other people.
It happens the most to me with kale chips, since they crisp up so quickly. But I've also set fire (recently) to the edge of a kitchen towel, which I really don't have any excuse for. My bad.

Do you appreciate finger foods like me? Or are you all grown up with a knife and fork?
I really love eating things like snacks! Even my veggies I would prefer to pick up. Don't worry guys, I am fully capable of using cutlery when I'm eating a proper meal :)

  1. I love eating mixed snack plates like that as meals.

    Did somebody say DAIRYMILK?

  2. Finger food. Yes, love it.

When my younger brother and his wife moved to California years ago, all the vistors from Canada would take Cadbury's chocolate to them, along with salt and vinegar potato chips, which they couldn't get there at the time.

When we are in the U.S. I fill our car up with goodies from Trader Joe's to bring back to Canada.

  3. That is my favorite way to eat! My kids love it also. The husband...not so much!

  4. I love snacking. And, I'm not going to lie, I've taken the setting off fire alarm while cooking story to a new level, but that's another highly embarrassing story. Cadburys! Yum! Have you ever had Cadbury Flake?

  5. I set off the alarm all the time, but mostly b/c I really need to clean my oven!

  8. Our SHOWER sets off the fire alarm if we have guests and like 3 people in a row shower. But I have also set it off cooking. I'm awesome like that. I have to do a real meal, none of those plates would fill me up, and I'd just eat 8 bowls of cereal as a result.

  9. every time I try to make seared tuna, i set off the fire alarm! It is inevitable, I have now started unhooking the fire alarm when i cook specific foods :) not safe, but at least I am not going deaf!

I love finger foods, your snacks look great!

  13. Every time I cook a pizza in the oven it sets the smoke alarm off. All the way across the apartment. So annoying.

  14. Lol, I set the fire alarm off all the time! I put something on the stove or oven and then completely forget about it.

  16. Yummy! I love all kinds of hummus and totally eat it as a meal! My favorite thing to dip in hummus is either red bell peppers or endive. I've made hummus with chipotle to add a little smokey flavor, I tried it with avocado once and wasn't a huge fan...

  17. i have removed the batteries from all the fire alarms on the first floor of our apt because they go off every second!

OMG with the cadbury! my last bar of the bubbly is almost gone... only 2 squares left. sad jen.

  18. Haha I eat with my hands alot too. Something's are just easier with your hands... :)

I keep setting off the fire alarm when I roast broccoli and brussels Because I Broil them at the end to get them crispy. I've learned o just turn on the fan and vent before I tun the broiler on, that way it airs out while I roast them

  19. I set off the smoke alarm last week when I was roasting up some veggies...don't feel bad. I actually liked them a bit charred...haha!

  25. I could live off Cadbury chocolate. Luckily there's an English grocer not far from my house. I'm going to stock up before I move. Maybe I'll just visit you first to hang out and eat Cadbury together! You probably will need extra estrogen in your place soon.

  27. I just realized a few months ago that "meals" don't have to be huge things... they consist of a bunch of small things, and usually it is easier to eat better that way too!

And yes, I have set off the smoke alarm many times. lol

  28. Oh my God. I set the fire alarm off like...weekly. We had a really crappy stove in the last apartment though & I think that was part of the reason -- just preheating the thing to 325 ran the risk of setting it off. Annoying.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Yum!!! Cadbury!!!! Although I'm partial to Wine Gums! Those are my across the pond weakness.

  30. Set OFF the fire alarm? Hell I start fires, haha. Okay not big ones, but I did melt a hole in the lino in the kitchen floor at my parents house one time. And another time they had to evacuate because I melted a plastic spatula and the black smoke was totally unbearable... after that I wasn't allowed to turn on the stove unless a) my parents were home and b) I sat at the kitchen table and watched it until it was done. Kind of embarrassing when you're 18 years old, haha.

Race the Bar 5k Recap (AKA: A Personal Worst!)

Do you remember a few weeks back, when I was all braggy about running in Florida in February/March? Sunny mornings around a lake with a light breeze off the water have turned, cruelly, into humid stretches of time where I am humbly reminded of my own limitations. You guys, I see these gazelle-like creatures, men and women alike, who prance on my running route with compression socks, a soft glow of perspiration at their brow. It's beautiful. It's also a harsh reminder that I am not them. I am currently running in the thinnest, smallest items of clothing I can without offending anyone (shirt stays on, people). I dare not step outside without some awful visor or wide-brimmed hat. When I hop in the shower after a run, my face is a deep crimson that causes my husband to voice his concern for my general well-being. Have I mentioned this is what happens after my easy runs, with a few walk breaks thrown in? Yeah. It's humbling. Now, I'm not complaining. It's beautiful...

Brace Yourselves: Cuteness is Coming

One of the hardest things about moving, for me, was wondering how the cats would adjust each time. Although our cats are super travelers at this stage, I feel really guilty every time we have to pack them up and force them onto a plane. I remember my grandma telling me years ago that when she moved with a cat, they put butter on their paws. That way, the cats spent the first day in a new house licking their paws to get them clean, and that was enough time to lose the "smell" of the old house. I love that story, and I wish the same principle applied to longer moves. Anyway, that's a super long intro to say that for the fellow cat ladies out there, our three fur babies are insanely happy in this jungle gym of a home here in Florida. It's warm, there are plenty of sunny spots to curl up a take a nap, and they have lots of room to spread out. Despite the space, of course, they still usually want to take a nap on my head at night. Obviously. They also love climbing on ou...

Chobani Review and Giveaway!

I'm pretty sure it's not a secret that me and Greek yogurt are in a serious relationship. I know, I know...hubby can read this. But he's well aware of the affair. At least once a day I need my fix. Sometimes it's a mid-morning snack with fruit, or a lunchtime topper for baked potatoes. Other times it's the sweet dessert topped with fruit and chocolate shavings that completes my night. Plain, vanilla, fruity...I could wax poetic about the stuff for ages. Don't worry, I won't. What I will say is that as much as I love Greek yogurt, I figured it was all the same. I saved a little money (18 cents on each container at my local store) in order to get the cheaper no-name brand. Then Chobani was on sale, so I picked up a few. Um, this stuff is THICK! So much creamier and thicker - and tastier - than any other brand I've tried. Sorry, extra 18 cents. You are now being diverted to my Chobani fund. I won a Chobani giveaway a couple of weeks ago hosted by ...
