A Long Run and "Solemates"

Thanks to all the people who left questions on my last post, The One Where I Reveal All the Crap You're Dying To Read. I'm working on the answers to your questions, but keep them coming if there is anything more you want to know about me!

First, my "solemate":

Yep, those are hubby's feet. And for the record, he came up with that. Also for the record, it's lame stuff  along those lines that makes me love him. Moving right along.....

This morning I was determined to get a long run in, despite the heat. Genius that I am, I only started at 8:30. It took about 3.5 minutes before I was drenched, head to toe. I thought I had a pretty good plan though--hubby dropped me off on a 2-mile running loop, and would come back to pick me up 2 hours later. I had no choice but to keep going! I ran 9.25 miles at a 9:14 pace, and then 2 miles of walking. Pretty happy to have that done, even with temps in the 80s and 95% humidity!

I stopped halfway through to get a cold drink in the grocery store. I realized that the money that was in my shorts pocket was SOAKED through. I was too embarrassed to hand it to the cashier, it was that bad. Thank goodness for self check-out!

Any long runs today? How are you doing in this crazy heat?
Ugh. Not what I wanted but I'm just happy it happened at all. Too hot!

Do you ever stop in a grocery store/gas station/public place on a run? Or head somewhere afterwards before changing?
I really don't mind being gross, sweaty, etc for vanity reasons--but I hate when I'm so wet that I leave drips on the floor behind me! I usually don't run anywhere near stores. Or people, for that matter.

  1. That pic is so cute!
Congrats on your run today... good for you for getting out there, especially in the heat.

I don't mind stopping somewhere sorta public if it is OBVIOUS I am the throes of a run or a hike, etc. But normally I don't need to do that.

  2. Long bike >>>long run in the heat. We started at 6 am for 50 miles. So glad we did, we were hurting by the end.

  3. Great long run considering the heat! I am doing my long run on the tread because I overslept my alarm for the marathon group run today *oops*

I don't have a problem going in a store post run, unless I'm dripping wet (ala post bikram yoga).
Since target and whole foods are like a mile from me, I usually just run to them to buy a few groceries and walk back- I usually do that after a real run.

    Have a great weekend!

  4. hahaha love that! what a great way to make yourself do a long run!

  5. Great job! I ran with a few friends, and we hoped to get 8-10. I was leaning toward, 10, but we definitely cut it at 8. I was completely soaked! Pretty miserable. I'll get 10 next week!

  6. I was disgusting a couple of weeks ago after a run - totally sweat filled shirt, crazy hair, the works. I had to go to the grocery store and I was a wreck. I saw a million people I know -but I knew them from work. One of my work duties is being a wellness coach for several area factories. I was actually proud to be seen in my post run state - felt authentic to be a role model at that moment. I did feel like I had to do a lot of explaining about my appearance thought.

I'm getting my runs in during this heat -though, they are slower, more walking, and definitely more challenging for sure!!! Our excessive heat warning was extended through tomorrow night - BOO!

  7. I went to Trader Joe's yesterday dripping wet. I had to ring out my sweaty shorts before going into the store because the sweat was dripping down leaving a sweaty trail from my car to the store entrance. It was totally cute and I think the fad is going to catch on. I'm going to copyright it.

  8. you are amazing for getting those miles in with the humidity!! you and your hubs are too cute with the "solemate" pic!

I used to always stop mid-run at a gas station for a water. I would normally just carry my debit card. But now that it is summer the water fountains around town are on plus I need water more regularly so I carry my handheld. have a good night :)

  9. How cute- soul mates! Even cuter since I caught up on your last post about how you asked him to marry you!!!

  10. I planned to do 16 miles today and I really wanted to get it done. I made it 11.6. I'm so upset, but I was drenched in sweat, out of water, and getting dizzy. Needless to say, I'm sticking to the treadmill until this heat breaks

  11. Last week was my first ever sweaty jaunt into a gas station...I usually don't run anywhere near one. I was so gross, but at least it was super early in the morning and there weren't any other customers there :)

  12. I know what you mean by the sweaty mess after 2 miles! Luckily Texas gave me a little break from the heat this morning. My long run ended up being 11 miles and it was overcast. I was still a sweaty mess afterwards because of the humidity though. I think I'm adjusting to the heat, but I don't run nearly as much as I did when it wasn's so hot. We'll get our reward in the winter when everyone else is snowed in!

  13. Sometimes I run to the post office, and yeah, sweaty money is disgusting! I'm so embaressed!

  14. LOVE that picture!! You totally had me fooled. Great job on the LR in that crazy heat. You are a rockstar girlie!

Enjoy the rest of your weekend. :)

  15. that is such a cute picture!! okay, so i've been lame and have lots of blogs to catch up on so i've got a few things to cram into this comment! haha!
    1) oh man, i have about no shame in going anywhere scuzzed out from a run...swab on some deodorant and call it a 'quasi-shower', i figure that with the running shorts on it kinda give me a license to get away with it (or at least that's wat i tell myself, right?!), like going into a place with a soccer uniform on or something. lol.
    2) i HATE bananas too! for me it was because i had the flu once, ate a banana, and well, u probably know the rest. from them on i just can't handle them.
    3) sooo happy to see that u're vaca was both candy and running filled. :) i'd call it heaven on earth too!!

glad to have u back tho. ;)

  18. if I don't start before 7am here is brutal! heat and humidity. WOW! Nice job Vanessa. and yes, always carry money......in a fuel belt NOT shorts. haha.

  19. hahaha so cute! Are your feet the same size?!?! Or does it just look that way in the picture?

  20. I don't have any grocery stores near me when I run but I do have a funny story about that. When my husband and I go to D.C. (which is kinda often) I love to watch runners come in to those little kiosk type gift shops to buy a drink in the middle of their run. Tons of runners do it, guess it's pretty common but they're all sweaty and huffing and puffing at the check-out!

  21. Cute pic of the feet :) I had to pic up my pup from the vet right after a workout once and it was not pretty. I am sure they were disgusted by my sweat and smell from my run.

  22. I love that you used the self check out because of wet money!

  23. I did my long run yesterday, 14 miles, and it felt phenomenal!! I've been so discouraged lately cause its so so hot but I got out early and took water...I love that you brought up the stopping in convenience store hah- I was probably a mile away from our Sheetz debating whether or not I should go in and refill and finally said F it what are they going to tell me- you're too sweaty and no you can't use our free water fountain!...so worth it :)

  24. awww the feet are too cute :) he is adorable! this heat has been crazy! kudos on an awesome job

  27. Awesome pace on a long run girl!! Especially in this heat and humidity that is smothing the east coast!

Race the Bar 5k Recap (AKA: A Personal Worst!)

Do you remember a few weeks back, when I was all braggy about running in Florida in February/March? Sunny mornings around a lake with a light breeze off the water have turned, cruelly, into humid stretches of time where I am humbly reminded of my own limitations. You guys, I see these gazelle-like creatures, men and women alike, who prance on my running route with compression socks, a soft glow of perspiration at their brow. It's beautiful. It's also a harsh reminder that I am not them. I am currently running in the thinnest, smallest items of clothing I can without offending anyone (shirt stays on, people). I dare not step outside without some awful visor or wide-brimmed hat. When I hop in the shower after a run, my face is a deep crimson that causes my husband to voice his concern for my general well-being. Have I mentioned this is what happens after my easy runs, with a few walk breaks thrown in? Yeah. It's humbling. Now, I'm not complaining. It's beautiful

1st Wedding Anniversary--Celebrating with Chocolate!

One year ago today, I married the love of my life. And I couldn't be happier! In celebration of our very first anniversary, here are some pictures of our favorite moments together: Our first trail race together Hiking together in GA And of course, our wonderful wedding in Hong Kong. We both decided to keep things very simple, with a casual ceremony with a few friends and family and then lunch at the Mandarin Oriental. Exactly what I wanted! With our parents after making it official! Our entire wedding party. Just family and dear friends! Goofing around with my garter at the reception lunch! You think you know what couples do after they get married? You know, their first night at man and wife? If you guessed eat ridiculously delicious chocolates in their bed at the Grand Hyatt, you're right.  Oh, I haven't changed. One year later and I still celebrate with sweet things! Thanks Tim, for being a wonderful husband. I love you!

Brace Yourselves: Cuteness is Coming

One of the hardest things about moving, for me, was wondering how the cats would adjust each time. Although our cats are super travelers at this stage, I feel really guilty every time we have to pack them up and force them onto a plane. I remember my grandma telling me years ago that when she moved with a cat, they put butter on their paws. That way, the cats spent the first day in a new house licking their paws to get them clean, and that was enough time to lose the "smell" of the old house. I love that story, and I wish the same principle applied to longer moves. Anyway, that's a super long intro to say that for the fellow cat ladies out there, our three fur babies are insanely happy in this jungle gym of a home here in Florida. It's warm, there are plenty of sunny spots to curl up a take a nap, and they have lots of room to spread out. Despite the space, of course, they still usually want to take a nap on my head at night. Obviously. They also love climbing on ou
